Dear Families,

Thank you to those of you who came to the school last week to meet with teachers and discuss the progress of your children. We have a lot coming up in the next two weeks. Please be on the lookout for an informational letter about Russia Week.

Donations Reminder

On Friday, we sent out a letter to you via email and also Edupage to inform you of our intent to collect items for donation to people in need, as a result of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

Donations will be accepted until 17:00 on Tuesday, February 14.

Primary School Spirit Day – February 14

For St. Valentine’s Day, students are encouraged to wear the colors red, pink, and white. Classes will organize some activities for students to celebrate the people and the things they love.

Pioneer Ball Friendly – Thursday, Feb. 16

We’ve organized a sports event for Primary this week. Year 5 and 6 students will play a friendly game of Pioneer Ball against a team of the same age from the British International School.

Reminder: CIS GOT TALENT

There is still time to prepare. Auditions are in April. Remember, you are welcome to organize a “family act” with family members performing alongside students.

Напоминание о пожертвованиях

В день святого Валентина студентам предлагается надеть что-то красное, розовое и белое. В классах для учащихся будут устроены занимательные задания в виде игр чтобы по достоинству оценить то, что они любят.

Игра пионербол, четверг, 16 февраля

На этой неделе мы организовали спортивное мероприятие для Начальной школы. Ученики 5 и 6 классов сыграют товарищескую игру пионербол против команды (того же возраста) из Британской международной школы.

Уважаемые Родители и Опекуны,

Last week was very active and full of positive emotions. After a very contended match, the Green House won the CIS Volleyball championship. As a prize for the efforts and teamwork they enjoyed a well-deserved pizza party during snack time on Friday. Thank you to Ms. Marina Vorobeva and Mr. Rim, our Head of Operations, and his team for their hard work and support in making this event such a great success.

Прошедшая неделя была очень активной и полной положительных эмоций. После напряженного матча «Зеленый дом» выиграл чемпионат CIS по волейболу. В качестве приза за приложенные усилия и командную работу у них была Пицца-вечеринка в пятницу. Спасибо Мс. Марине Воробьевой и Мр. Риму, нашему операционному директору, и его команде за усердную работу и поддержку в обеспечении успеха этого мероприятия.

I have also seen a lot of activity happening in the classrooms as we get closer to the end of the term. I kindly want to remind all families that the last day of the term is Saturday March 4. We will also be having very colorful Russia Week activities during the week before that will involve students actively. I want to strongly encourage you to help your child attend all classes by planning your trips accordingly.

В период с 27 февраля по 3 марта течение недели до этого у нас пройдут очень красочные мероприятия Недели Русской культуры, в которых будут активно участвовать студенты. Я настоятельно призываю Вас помочь своему ребенку обеспечить посещение всех занятий, и соответствующим образом запланировать свои поездки.

Thank you for actively supporting your child with complying with the school uniform requirements. Together we have gone a long way. I want to also remind parents that the use of mobile phones by students in the dining hall is not allowed. Students who struggle to comply with this school requirement will be asked to keep their phones in dedicated boxes when entering the dining hall beginning this week. I have observed that when mobile phones are absent from the dining table, students are more likely to engage in meaningful and active social activities interaction with their peers. Thank you again for your support.

Также хочу напомнить родителям, что использование учащимися мобильных телефонов в столовой не допускается. Учащимся, которые не в состоянии или отказываются выполнить это школьное требование, будет предложено хранить свои телефоны в специальных коробках при входе в столовую, начиная с этой недели. Хочу отметить, что когда за обедом отсутствуют мобильные телефоны, учащиеся чаще участвуют в осмысленных и активных социальных взаимодействиях со своими сверстниками. Еще раз спасибо за Вашу поддержку.

This week we will also celebrate Friendship Day, on Tuesday, February 14. During this day only, Secondary students will be allowed to wear non-uniform colors, as long as their clothing have no pictures on them.

На этой неделе мы также будем отмечать День дружбы, во вторник, 14 февраля. Только в этот день учащимся средней и старшей школ будет разрешено носить одежду, не соответствующую школьным цветам, если на ней нет изображений.

Finally, I want to inform you that Secondary school teachers have started publishing their consultation/tutorial after-school hours on EduPage. Our students are encouraged to sign-up for them to clarify their questions and receive extra academic assistance from their teachers.

From the Classroom

Mr. Carlos (Spanish)

We continue to work on differentiation, trying to perfect the coordination that this requires: control time, design complementary activities and bet on autonomous learning.

In Year 7 we have a new student with the experience of having lived in Spain, and thanks to whom we will be able to enrich the contents.

Year 8 students have started taking end-of-term tests. They have learned to contrast the present, past and future tenses, and to talk about their favorite food, and to order it at the restaurant.

In Year 9 we have a new student starting to study Spanish now. It is an interesting class in which different stages of knowledge of the language coexist. For this, students are aware of their daily work, and must coordinate and help each other to meet their individual goals.

In Year 10 and Year 11 students with different levels also coexist, and each of them is in charge of reinforcing their autonomy as students. Despite having different stages of learning, the results are being positive.

In Year 12 we have had the mock exam, and we are currently preparing to reinforce the oral part. In speaking they have the extra challenge of having to prepare an oral presentation and then defend it in conversation.

Mr. Kennedy (Business, Geography, Global Perspectives)

This week involved the final preparations for the vending machine business for the business students. We would like to thank all the parents who responded to the survey where we requested feedback on the idea. Due to a unanimous vote in favour of the idea, we will be installing a vending machine at school which will be run completely by the students. This gives the opportunity to put theory into practice and teaches students the principles of business by experiencing those concepts first-hand.

The geography students have been learning about natural resources, population, weather, climate, and tropical storms and will soon be moving onto development and food production. Term tests are soon approaching so students will be preparing for these both at school and at home.

My classroom is open for extra lessons for all students on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 15:40 – 16:15 for whichever students may need additional geography or business studies support.

Mr. Jenkins (History)

The mocks gave an excellent insight into where all the year 11s, 12s, and 13s are academically, and will inform our lessons for the remainder of the year; the results were encouraging, overall.

Regards year 10s: after the addition of two new students the class has become reinvigorated, and we’ve welcomed some fascinating new perspectives.

The KS3 students are progressing well. Year 9s are developing writing skills to ready them for the big step-up necessary for their entry into year 10, while the 7s and 8s are coming on leaps and bounds with their acquisition of fundamental history skills.

Mr. Alm (English and Literature)

Year 13 English Language completed their unit on English in the World. Students examined global and local issues related to English as a lingua franca, prescriptivist and descriptivist critiques of variations of English, and possible courses for the evolution of the English language. In Year 12 English Literature, the class continued to read Atonement by Ian McEwan, examining elements of Postmodernism and analysing text excerpts through a variety of literary lenses. Year 11 English Literature has begun to read the play Journey’s End and will explore the language, structure, and dramatic forms employed to communicate its themes. Year 11 Global Perspectives have formed groups for their team project and will explore issues related to demilitarisation and child labor over the next two months.

Ms. Victoria (ICT and Computer Science)

In this term, students of Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 learn how to write algorithms and use the basics of various programming languages like Python, JavaScript and SQL. This week, they learn to solve simple problems using these languages.

Mr. Cárdenas (Mathematics)

Students in Year 10 are exploring ways to measure surface area and volume of tridimensional shapes. As a result they should be able to approximate the surface and volume of real-life objects, such as buildings, or even the ZSD toll road.

Year 11 is learning about Statistics and data representation while Year 12 is beginning its dive into the adventures of Probability Theory. Year 13 students are learning how to prove or disprove a hypotheses involving random variables that are distributed binomially or normally. Lots of learning and challenges this week.

Mr. Watkins (English, Geography, and Global Perspectives)

What a year 2023 has been so far! The year 9 Geography class wrapped up their Africa unit and had the choice of completing an essay or presentation based on glaciers.

The year 10 and 11 English classes have been looking at extended writing based on their IGCSE mock assessments, as well as intensive comprehension tasks.

The year 12 English class has been working on narrative texts, where multiple students are collaborating on a series of multiple short texts. The focus for these texts is creating suspense and excitement within the writing by developing an effective structure.

In IELTS class, we have been focusing on reading and extracting relevant terminology from longer texts (in order to answer comprehension questions). We have also been looking at IELTS university requirements.

Mr. Sickles (Science)

Year 10 students have continued their study of chemistry.  They looked at different property trends found on the periodic table, including halogen reactivity using displacement reactions.  Currently, they are finishing up their study of chemical bonding and chemical formula deduction.  In Year 11, students finished up their study of plant reproduction and are finishing up their exploration of the interactions within ecosystems and different impacts humans have on ecosystems.  They also took some time to carry out electrolysis of brine (concentrated salt water).  Year 12 AS Biology students finished up their mock exams, including a practical assessment, and their study of DNA and protein synthesis.  They also tried to extract some DNA from a few different fruits.  A Biology (Year 13) finished up studying inheritance and regulation of gene expression and is currently investigating the different methods through which natural selection and evolution occur.

Ms. Liuba (Russian and English)

The Year 8 student dived into the topic of the noun and Russian cases. We continue to learn poems by Russian poets and have started a new book for home reading.
In Year 10, the students started reading Pushkin's story "The Captain's Daughter" analyzing not only the actions of the heroes of the novel, but also the historical, social and geographical aspects of the story.

Ms. Marina (Physical Education)

First two weeks of February secondary students have had House Volleyball Tournament. Every student who was interested in volleyball had a chance to participate in this competition. The winner of the tournament is Green House in both lower and upper secondary. Everyone who participated and supported their houses did a very good job.

Mr. Lyons (Mathematics, Science)

Lower secondary mathematics has been all about sequences and straight-line graphs, two neatly linked topics. Whether investigating the relationship between terms, deriving a straight-line equation, or plotting graphs, all the students have shown a really encouraging level of understanding and proficiency. Next stop, ratios and percentages.

Year 7 science is focusing on energy – the different types, conversions and sources. Students are often encouraged to use all their potential, and they have certainly done so in our lessons, using all the energy accumulated by climbing the stairs and converting it into electrical energy to power their brains!

Electronics is the name of the game in year 12, as we have explored the basic principles of circuitry and the formulae that accompany it. Lab time has given us the opportunity to test these principles, such as the relationship between resistance, voltage and current and the charge supplied over a period of time. Now moving on to Kirchoff’s laws – series and parallel circuits – we will soon be able to design practical circuits involving thermistors and light dependent resistors.

Mr. Claasen (Science)

The last few weeks all of the lower secondary students that I teach worked on completing their chapter and activity videos as well as posters. They will do two batches of these assignments during the year and it forms a significant part of their mark for the year.

The Year 8 class has been learning about metals, non-metals and corrosion. They focused on the differences between metals and non-metals, how the physical properties of metals make them a useful material and why some chemical reactions are not useful. Skills we focused on were planning an investigation to test an idea, identifying important variables; choosing which to change, control and measure and making predictions using scientific knowledge and understanding.

The Year 9 class studied learned how to prepare salts. To do this they had to show a chemical reaction as a balanced symbol equation and how to make a salt using the reaction between an acid and a metal or metal carbonate. This chapter is quite skills heavy, and students had to learn how to write explanations using their scientific knowledge and understanding, choose the correct apparatus to carry out a method as well as explain how to make results more reliable, and reduce errors.

The Year 12 Chemistry class is looking at the states of matter in which they learned about the kinetic theory of gases, the ideal gas law, and what it takes for a gas to approach ideal behaviour. They then moved on to the kinetic-molecular model of the liquid state after which they learned how crystalline solids have a repeating, ordered arrangement of atoms or molecules called a lattice.

In Year 13 Chemistry we’ve been learning about entropy and Gibbs free energy. They learned that Entropy (∆S) is a measure of the disorder or randomness of a system and that the entropy change for a given process can be predicted as positive or negative based on the second law of thermodynamics, therefore it can be calculated. They then moved on to the standard Gibbs free energy change of reaction where they learned that the spontaneity of a reaction can be determined by the sign of ∆Gθ and that the effect of temperature change on the spontaneity of a reaction can be predicted by examining the standard enthalpy and entropy changes.

Ms. Irina (Mathematics – Russian Program)

А в математике все стабильно. Ребята из yr9 в курсе алгебры изучили системы уравнений с двумя переменными и теперь умеют их решать тремя способами, а также применяют новые навыки при решении текстовых задач. Многие ученики показывают очень хорошие результаты.

Девушки из yr13 планомерно готовятся к ЕГЭ, вспоминают изученные темы, решают тренировочные варианты.

У ребят из yr12 ЕГЭ только в следующем году. Но и в этот учебный год они трудятся, как говорится, «не поднимая головы, не покладая рук». Не смогла удержаться и с удовольствием запечатлела этот кадр.

We are accepting applications in the following categories:

• Circus skills / magic show
• Theatrical performance
• Family project (new nomination this year. We invite parents, brothers, sisters to perform alongside our students)

The audition will take place in the beginning of April. The competition concert will happen at the end of April. We await your applications!

House Point System

New students have been added to their Houses. Students will be rewarded for behaviors that reflect CIS values:

Responsible, Globally-minded, Life-long learners, People-centered, Collaborative

The House Point Committee will be organizing a small House competition for Primary students to happen in March.

I once again want to thank you for such a great Parent-Teacher conference. Faculty and families alike had an opportunity to check notes and have conversations to help our students achieve even greater success.

Я еще раз хочу поблагодарить Вас за замечательное родительское собрание. Преподаватели и родители имели возможность пообщаться, чтобы помочь нашим студентам добиться еще большего успеха.

Today we also had the finals of our Secondary School volleyball championship. The winner team will represent CIS St. Petersburg in a friendly match with other international schools in St. Petersburg. Congratulations to the winners!

Сегодня у нас прошли финальные матчи нашего школьного чемпионата по волейболу. Команда-победитель будет представлять CIS Санкт-Петербург в товарищеском матче с другими международными школами Санкт-Петербурга. Поздравляем победителей!

I want to thank Ivan and Vladimir from Year 7 for their initiative today. They very kindly shared popcorn and juice during the volleyball matches so students could more enthusiastically cheer for their teams. This initiative is a great example of student-led learning and community building.

Last week students also challenged each other in our House Trivia activity. Students used their general culture knowledge to earn “house points” and thus help their fellow house-mates get closer to winning the “CIS St. Petersburg House Cup.” Well done!

На прошлой неделе учащиеся также соревновались друг с другом в нашей викторине. Учащиеся использовали свои общие знания для того, чтобы заработать «баллы дома» и таким образом помочь своим товарищам по «дому» приблизиться к победе в «Кубке домов CIS Санкт-Петербург». Отличная работа!

Beginning next week, teachers will begin to systematically provide after-school tutorials. Students will be able to sign up via EduPage. Stay tuned for more information.

Mr. Cafferkey (Business and Economics)

Year 11, 12 and 13 have now finished their mock exams. All 3 Business and 2 Economics classes face external assessment this summer. Most of our students performed very well and the ones that did not, now know what is needed to improve their grades!

We also had the opportunity to launch the first CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL ART AUCTION, to be held at school on the 22nd of March, which will feature quality artwork which our students will auction off for a local children’s charity. Below you can see just some of their work. Please put this date in your diary now!

Dear Families, 

It’s been a busy month. Below is some news and a few reminders. 

Welcome New Students! 

Over the past two weeks, we are very happy to have welcomed more new students to Primary. Students joined us in the Early Years, Year 1, and Year 2 classes. 

To help with their adaptation to our English-speaking environment and to help them more quickly access the main English curriculum, we have organized ESL intervention, focusing on phonics foundations needed for reading and writing. 

Parent Conferences  

We will hold parent conferences for Primary next week: 

Dates: February 7-9 

Time: 15:45-17:00 

This is an opportunity to discuss any questions with your child’s class teacher. Your class teachers will put their available times on Edupage so you can book a meeting time with them. Please keep an eye out for communication from your teachers regarding conferences. 

Weather 

We are looking at another 2 weeks of frequent snowfall. Please make sure your children are well prepared with appropriate outdoor clothing for playing in the snow.

Добро пожаловать новым студентам! 

Мы рады приветствовать новых учеников в Начальной школе, которые присоединились к нам в 1-м и 2-м классах в эти две недели. 

Чтобы помочь им адаптироваться и помочь быстрее получить доступ к основной учебной программе по английскому языку и англоязычной среде, мы организовали дополнительные занятия ESL, уделяя особое внимание фонетическим основам, необходимым для чтения и письма.

Ms. Nadezhda (Music)

We have started learning a big new music program! Our main topic is soundtracks to legendary movies. Y7, Y8, Y9 are writing an essay on the topic "how music can affect the perception of film”. Now every lesson is held with an atmosphere of creativity.

Also we need instrumentalists who could accompany their classmates. Everyone is welcome!

Mr. Tom Bethell (English and Global Perspectives)

2023 has started and with it comes a real rhythm and momentum in our English literature classes. I’m delighted to work with such creative and bright students!

Year 7 continues to impress with their vivid imaginations during our descriptive writing unit. Our class works collaboratively in a shared presentation and despite our geographical distances (South Korea, Spain, Russia), our ability to do live editing of each other’s work means the distance disappears!

In year 8, we’re coming to the close of our first novel unit – George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. Students have made significant improvements in their ability to integrate textual evidence and are also enjoying dramatic readings during the lessons.

Similarly, year 9 are now deeply immersed in their first novel, an ambitious (and harrowing) work called Martyn Pig. Along with the gripping story, students have written impressive philosophical reflections on free will and moral relativism! Never underestimate what our students can achieve!

Finally, our year 10 has been infused with new energy thanks to the arrival of three new students, Maria, Kristina, and Nadia. Their introduction coincides with the start of a new unit on poetry. I can’t wait to see how this brilliant group work with a diverse range of poems from the18th century onwards. Their first attempts at an imitation of William Carlos Williams’s heavily anthologised “The Red Wheelbarrow” showed great promise.

Keep up the good work students and remember to find the joy in reading and writing.

Mr. Tom Kenny (English)

Well, this term has got off to a flying start in EAL and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon! The same as last term, the first lessons were focused on setting ourselves academic goals. In year 7, Vladimir has decided to continue his sterling work on English itself as a subject, and has set his academic sights on achieving high grades in both EFL and EAL, alongside being interviewed and answering fluently.

In other years, these academic goals have moved more towards improvement in trickier subjects. Year 8 have decided to improve their command of Geography, whereas year 9 favour a stronger focus on science.

Such goals have influenced our classes, of course. While we still study grammar as an abstraction at times, the majority of our work now closely interacts with the material in the coursebooks of their chosen goal-subjects.

Whatever their desires for the coming term, I wish them all luck and strength, tenacity and ingenuity; with such qualities, I’m certain we’ll get to where we want to be.

Friday we finished our first week of mock examinations. As results start to come in, we will have an even better understanding on where they are and what are the next steps to follow to have a successful examination session in May. 

В пятницу мы закончили нашу первую неделю пробных экзаменов. По мере того, как результаты начнут поступать, у нас будет еще лучшее понимание того, на каком они уровне и какие следующие шаги необходимо предпринять, чтобы провести успешную экзаменационную сессию в мае. 

I want to thank all the families who have made an effort to send their children to school with uniform. I can see less students wearing clothes with pictures and outside the school guidelines who are required to wear their sweaters inside-out.

Dear Families,

We are into the routine of the term here in Primary.  Below are just a couple of reminders as we move forward.

Uniform and Clothing

As a reminder, the school’s official uniform can be purchased on this website: https://www.cisgoods.com/

If you are not able to purchase the official uniform, your child can wear clothing that follows the uniform style.

• Shirt – white, long or short-sleeved with a collar (polo shirts are acceptable)
• Sweater/pullover – red
• Trousers (skirt optional for girls) – dark blue formal trousers. No sport pants, please.
• Shoes – black, formal

PE – On PE days, students may come to school in their PE clothes. This clothing should be simple with no designs or text.

Outside

The weather lately has been quite erratic, with temperatures way up and way down. We believe being outside to run around and play is critical for a balanced day at school, but we also want our students to stay healthy. This is why it’s important for them to have:

• proper snow boots
• Snow pants
• Warm coat
• Scarf, hat, gloves/mittens

Прогулки

Мы считаем, что гулять на улице - бегать и играть, имеет решающее значение в создании сбалансированного дня в школе, но мы также хотим, чтобы наши ученики оставались здоровыми. Вот почему важно, чтобы у детей были:

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

It was refreshing to start the calendar year with so many students coming to school during the first week. More and more families are opting to come back to school on time and make the most out of their studies. Thank you!

I want to also welcome our new families to CIS. We have six new students in Year 10 and one in Year 11. Our CIS family is growing.

Today we started our first session of mock examinations. These assessments are an important part of our students’ preparation, as they provide a positive experience on what the final examination process will look like and increase their probability of success. I will send the schedule in a separate message. Please note that the schedule is subject to change.

As a final note, I want to remind our families of the need of coming to school with uniform and with simple sport clothes (without any pictures) during PE days. Students with pictures on their sweaters or t-shirts will be asked to take appropriate action so that the picture is not seen, such as wearing it inside-out. Please do not hesitate to contact me via EduPage if you have any questions regarding the school uniform or any other school-related issues.

В заключение хочу напомнить о необходимости приходить в школу в форме и в простой спортивной одежде (без каких-либо изображений) в дни физкультуры. What an active week! The assessment week is over, and teachers are finalizing report cards, while students are having their final rehearsal before the Winter Concert. I am impressed and humbled with our students’ resilience, flexibility and readiness to participate in the school’s events. It has been a great end to the year. Thank you.

From the Classroom / Новости из класса

Mr. Keegan Watkins (English, Geography, GP)

Year 9 Geography class has been exploring the ‘Scramble for Africa’ in more detail. This included a class project and an assessment. The class also visited the Kunstkamera museum recently. Year 10 Global Perspectives commenced their individual presentation preparations (based on a self-chosen research topic). The class also considered past exam papers related to digital technology. Year 13 IELTS class have been preparing for the official IELTS exam by focussing on all main language skills. Official practice exams were held on two separate occasions. The year 10 and 11 IGCSE English classes wrapped up their reading and writing sections of the IGCSE syllabus and completed their assessments. These were based on comprehension tasks, summaries, and extended writing. Year 12 wrapped up the necessary components of the AS-level syllabus in order to write their assessments. These were based on directed response and persuasive/discursive writing.

Mr. Kori Sickles (Science, Biology)

In Year 13 Biology, our focus has been one control and coordination throughout the body.  The main areas we have covered are neurons and neuromuscular junction.  In Year 12 Biology, we are exploring the movement of substances in and out of cells and what influences the rate at which this movement occurs.  For Year 11, we have focused on the transport of materials throughout the body using the cardiovascular system, culminating with our dissection of a heart.  Our Year 10 team has been looking at various methods used to separate mixtures, including a distillation to separate water and the ethanol produced by yeast cells.

Ms. Liuba Kaporskaya (Russian)

This week we have been fully preparing for the upcoming exams. We revised previously studied topics, lexical and grammatical. In Year 8, we got acquainted with the famous Russian cartoon "Vovka v Tridevyatom tsarstve" as well as practiced writing a new letter in cursive. This term, Yakov B had the pleasure to recite a famous poem by S.Esenin “Belaya Neryoza” that he learned by heart in front of Mr Carlos, Mr Kennedy and some Year 7 students. More poems to come next term!

Ms. Marina Vorobeva (Physical Education)

With secondary students we have had in-class badminton tournaments. More than 50 games were played in every year group. The winners of every class have got three house points, 2^nd place – 2 house points and 3^rd place – 1 house point. Almost every student participated very well and to the best of his\her ability.

This week we have moved into the next sport of the curriculum – volleyball and it is going to be learned and played for the next few weeks.

Mr. Matthew Lyons (Mathematics, Science, Physics)

In year 7 we have been exploring angles and shapes as we master our geometry skills – very much a love or hate topic, it’s fair to say the class was split on opinion, but the end product has been promising. In science we finally experienced our first ‘kaboom’ as we tested the gas being released when magnesium reacted with hydrochloric acid – all part of our current topic – materials and matter.

Year 8 and 9 have both been exploring data collection and recording techniques, unknowingly working together to discover the relationship between age and hand/foot size before analysing the data and making conclusions and predictions from the results. Year 8 have since moved on to study fractions in more detail, whilst year 9 have begun looking into area, perimeter and volume of 2d and 3d complex shapes.

In year 12, we have been putting our theory to the test with practical experiments to study trajectories, applying equations of motion and energy to discover the efficiency of a system. Approaching the end of the term, we are wrapping up our kinetics, momentum, energy and matter topics, ready to delve into electronics in January.

Mr. Wolfaardt Claassen (Science)

To finish the term off the Year 8s wrote their Biology exam to start getting used to the pressure of writing exams on all the work they did to date. We’re slightly ahead of schedule and have started the Chemistry section for the year. For Chemistry they have started to learn how to use the particle theory to explain changes of state, gas pressure and diffusion. We have also been introduced to the Periodic Table that plays such a big role in chemistry. After learning about the first 20 elements of the Periodic Table we started to explore the relationships between elements, compounds, and mixtures.

The Year 9s finished their last Biology chapter this week. They learned how to use and construct keys to identify plants and animals, how organisms inherit characteristics and how we look at specific characteristics for selective breeding. We have also started to look at Darwin’s impact with regards to the theory of evolution.

Year 12 had an in-depth look at chemical bonding. They explored the types of chemical bonds, how ions are formed, constructing dot-and-cross diagrams and what exactly covalent bonds are. After that they learned about dative covalent bonds, bond length and energy and the how to use the Valence shell electron pair repulsion theory to predict the shapes of a molecule. Finally, they explored the concept of electronegativity and dipole-dipole forces.

The Year 13s looked at the concept of reaction kinetics. First, they looked at the factors affecting reaction rates. Once they identified these factors, they learned how to determine the rate of a reaction by using rate equations. From these equations they discovered how to identify the order of a reaction as well as calculations involving rate constants of a reaction and a catalyst’s role in reactions.

Ms. Irina Tuzakova (Mathematics - Russian Program)

Неделя выдалась сложной, различные проверочные работы не обошли стороной и математику. Студенты yr12 выполнили практическую работу по геометрии, построив на оценку сечения для тетраэдра и куба. А к субботе подготовились и сдали зачет по теме "Параллельность прямых и плоскостей". К сожалению, контрольная по алгебре отодвинулась по срокам и пройдет позже. Также немного повезло (или не повезло) студентам yr9. Из-за болезни учителя и их контрольная по алгебре пройдет на последней учебной неделе, так что у ребят еще есть возможность подготовиться. Девушки из yr13 заканчивают изучение курса геометрии (стереометрии). Они научились находить объемы таких фигур, как конус и цилиндр. Эти студенты выходят на прямую по подготовке к единому государственному экзамену за курс средней школы. Пожелаем им удачи!

Ms. Kristina Seravnina (Mathematics and Physics - Russian Program)

На этой недели ребята из y11 писали пробный вариант ОГЭ для отслеживания прогресса обучения и выявлении тем для повторения и разбора. Математика у учеников из y8 состояла из большого количества математических игры, которые позволяют не только учить детей работать в группах, но и заинтересовать их в изучении новой темы несмотря на приближающиеся каникулы. Для y10 была проведена лабораторная работа по физике, где ребятам было нужно измерить силу тяжести разных предметов и разобраться чем отличается масса от веса.

As we wind up the first half of this school year, we look back over a term that was chock full of events that involved students in activities in and outside of the classroom. We are proud of what they have accomplished and of the school community we are building.  

To continue this momentum, we are excited to bring you the talent and hard work of our students in just a couple of days! Students have been working not only on their performances but also on paintings and decorations to be displayed in our theater reception area and auditorium.

Winter Concert: A Night at the Theater!

Your teachers have sent home the lyrics. We have been practicing during free time at school. However, it will help if you encourage your children to practice at home.

The event will happen in two acts. Children should be wearing the following:

Act I – formal  

Girls Year 1-2 = costume will be provided by the school

Girls Nursery/Reception and Year 3-6 = evening dress of any color, dress shoes

Boys = black bow tie, white shirt, black trousers, black dress shoes

Act II – casual (mostly)

Nursery/Reception = same as Act I

Year 1-6 = Holiday-themed sweater, jeans, sport shoes

Зимний концерт: Ночь в театре!

Учителя отправили Вам тексты песен для разучивания. Мы также учим слова песен в свободное время в школе. Тем не менее, если Вы с детьми будете повторять слова песен дома -  это очень поможет.

Концерт будет проходить в двух действиях. Дети должны быть одеты следующим образом:

Акт I – официальный стиль

Девочки классов Year 1-2 = костюм будет предоставлен школой

Девочки Nursery/Reception и классов Year 3-6 = праздничное платье любого цвета, туфли

Мальчики = черный галстук-бабочка, белая рубашка, черные брюки, черные туфли

Акт II – повседневный стиль (все, кроме Nursery/Reception)

Assessment Week / Экзаменационная неделя

Today we start our assessment period. Your child will have quizzes, tests, and hand-in end-of-semester projects this week that will have a significant impact on your child’s grade. I encourage students to come to school on-time and make sure that they have enough sleep to be at their best and perform accordingly. Reducing YouTube videos, videogames, and computer/gadget time in general will also have a positive impact in your child’s learning and grades.

Сегодня мы начинаем экзаменационную неделю. На этой неделе Ваш ребенок будет сдавать экзамены, напишет тесты и представит проекты, которые окажут значительное влияние на оценки в этом учебном периоде. Я призываю учащихся приходить в школу вовремя и прошу Вас убедиться, что они спят достаточное количество часов, чтобы быть в лучшей форме и получать соответствующие результаты. Сокращение времени на YouTube, видеоигры и использование компьютера или гаджетов также окажет положительное влияние на обучение и, следовательно, оценки Вашего ребенка.

Winter Concert / Зимний концерт

The Winter Concert, the event for which our students have been preparing and practicing for several weeks, is already around the corner. Do not make any other plans for next week’s Wednesday, December 14. I am looking forward to greeting you personally at this CIS Gala Event.

Зимний концерт - мероприятие, к которому наши студенты готовятся, проводят репетиции в течение нескольких недель, уже не за горами. Пожалуйста, освободите время на следующей неделе, в среду, 14 декабря. Я с нетерпением жду возможности лично поприветствовать Вас на этом Гала-мероприятии CIS.

Uniforms / Школьная форма​​​​​​​

During my morning conversations with parents and during the Parent-Teacher conference, one topic that has been brought to my attention by many parents is uniforms. Uniforms at CIS are mandatory. I have learned through my conversations with CIS families, that most parents also want their children to come to school in uniform or wearing the school dress code. However, some parents shared their concerns with me regarding their children’s reluctance to wear it because “they would be the only ones wearing it, no one else does.” Allow me to disagree with that statement. More and more families are encouraging their children to come with uniform or smartly dressed following the school dress code. I want to encourage our parents to send their children in full uniform to school. I want to encourage our students to wear the uniform without waiting for their parents to remind them.

Во время моих утренних бесед с родителями и во время Родительских собраний, есть одна тема, которую упомянули многие родители— это вопрос школьной формы. Форма в CIS – обязательна. Из моих разговоров с семьями наших учащихся я узнал, что большинство родителей также хотят, чтобы их дети приходили в школу в форме или носили одежду, соответствующую школьному дресс-коду. Тем не менее, некоторые родители поделились со мной опасениями своих детей по поводу нежелания ее носить, потому что «они будут единственными, кто ее носит; никто другой этого не делает». Позвольте мне не согласиться с этим утверждением. Все больше и больше родителей поощряют своих детей приходить в форме или одетыми в соответствии со школьным дресс-кодом. What is allowed and what is not? / Что можно, а что нельзя

I want to remind you that you can buy your child’s uniform at https://www.cisgoods.com. In the meantime, please remember that boys should dress smartly with a mandatory collar or polo shirt. Formal trousers (not sports pants) are also mandatory. Girls must also dress smartly in dark dressing trousers or a skirt. A white buttoned collared blouse, shirt, or polo is also mandatory. Pullovers or sweaters should be red-colored.

During a PE day, students can bring comfortable sport clothing; however, the clothing must be plain, without any design, pictures, or text.

А пока, пожалуйста, не забывайте, что мальчики должны одеваться элегантно, обязательно в рубашке с воротником или в рубашке поло. Брюки (не спортивные штаны) также обязательны. Charity Drive / Благотворительное мероприятие

We are extending our CIS Charity Drive until our Winter Concert Day, December 14.

We are collecting items that will be given to Solntse which is a charity fund that helps children in need in Saint Petersburg. They help children in orphanages, families with single mothers, children who are in hospital on a long-term basis, and children who have been abused.

Additionally, house points will be awarded to houses for the number of items brought and placed in the donation boxes. Please see the attached image for items that are appropriate for donations.

Your kindness is appreciated.

Мы продлеваем нашу благотворительную акцию в CIS до дня нашего Зимнего концерта, 14 декабря.

Мы собираем пожертвования, которые будут переданы благотворительному фонду «Солнце». Фонд помогает нуждающимся детям в Санкт-Петербурге. Они заботятся о детях в детских домах, помогают матерям-одиночкам, детям, которые находятся в больнице на длительном лечении, и детям, подвергшимся насилию.

Кроме того, домам (CIS Houses) будут начисляться баллы за количество принесенных предметов, которые будут складываться

И снова вас приветствует кафедра математики. Как успехи с предыдущей задачей, удалось решить? А мы с новым вызовом, ведь на кону статус математического капитана! Уверена, что каждый из вас, когда смотрел какой-нибудь детективный фильм представлял себя в роле сыщика. Сейчас мы вам дадим такую возможность. Внизу приложена задача, как раз для настоящих героев фильма. Будем ждать ваших ответов!

Три купца должны поделить между собой 21 бочонок, из которых 7 бочонков полных кваса, 7 полных наполовину и 7 пустых. Спрашивается, как они могут поделиться так, чтобы каждый имел одинаковое количество кваса и одинаковое количество бочонков, причём переливать квас из бочонка в бочонок нельзя.

Примечание: предполагается, конечно, что все бочонки – полные, полные наполовину и пустые – равны между собой.

From the Classroom

Mr. Carlos (Spanish Language)

We have been dedicating these last few days to preparing for the end-of-term tests, and we have practiced the contents worked during the last weeks. Y7 has focused on talking about leisure and the activities they do during their free time: what they like to do, how often they do their favorite activities, the weather they prefer when practicing, etc. Y8 students have also talked about their tastes, their life... and they do so by combining past and present tenses. Y9 has focused on the world of work: what it is like, what functions different workers have or what professions they would like to pursue. For their part, Y11 has been practicing how to talk about personal and social live, working on topics such as family and friends, leisure, shopping, food and drinks from the Hispanic world, restaurants... Thus, they have worked with comparatives, possessives, the present continuous or demonstratives. After a long week of study, they are now ready to face new challenges.

Mr. Donovan Kennedy (Business, Geography, Global Perspectives)

Last Friday, our geography students visited the Kunstkamera to learn about anthropological history, culture, and sciences.  Students particularly enjoyed seeing the wax models of people from ancient civilisations around the world.
CIS understands that learning through experience is a powerful method to enlighten the imagination and reinforce what is learned at school.

Mr. Graham Jenkins (History)

KS3 students have started to really blossom in recent weeks: they’ve absorbed, and built on, the content and skills from the first time, and I’m confident they’ll have a well-rounded skillset come June.

Year 10 is doing excellent work on the interwar period and have taken to the lessons with aplomb.

Year 11, as a whole, is on course for some pleasing IGCSE results – but only with focus, and punctuality.

The A-Level students are continuing to develop and improve their writing skills, and analysis, ready for the mocks: we’ve started new topics and they’ve successfully built upon their learning in the first unit.

Mr. Gregory Alm (English Language and Literature)

Year 13 English Language completed their unit on Child Language Acquisition. The students had conversations with primary students. They analysed the conversations to identify features and stages of language development.

Year 12 English Literature read Tennessee Williams’ play “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” then watched a stage production to analyse the director and actors’ interpretations of the characters.

Year 11 English Literature continued their prose unit, analysing Langston Hughes’ use of dialect to establish characterisation and setting in his short story, “Thank You, Ma’m”. In addition, they wrote an analytical essay in preparation for their mock exams.

Year 11 Global Perspectives are finishing their drafts of their Individual Reports, which constitute 1/3 of their IGCSE exam.

Mr. Juan Cárdenas (Mathematics)

During the last three weeks, IGCSE and A-Level mathematics students have been extremely active getting ready for the upcoming assessment week.

Year 10 learned how to solve systems consisting of both linear and quadratic equations both graphically and analytically. Year 11 students learned the elements of set theory and tried to enhance their grade by retaking the test on lines, graphs, and quadratics. Year 12 students are on a fast, but steady pace, learning about related rates, problems involving derivatives, and the basic ideas behind the integration of functions.

I encourage my students to continue to develop their understanding and practicing their skills through our online platforms IXL and DeltaMath. Mathematics is not a spectator’s sport, but rather a discipline that requires imagination, innovation, but also practice and dedication.

Ms. Victoria Damanskaya (ICT and Computer Science)

This week, the lower secondary students were faced with practical tasks from everyday life that they needed to solve using Microsoft Office programs, such as Access (Year 9), Excel (Year 8) and Word (Year 7). The acquired skills will help them in their studies and in later life.

На этой неделе студенты старшей школы столкнулись с практическими задачами из повседневной жизни, которые им нужно было решить с помощью программ Microsoft Office, таких как Access (9 класс), Excel (8 класс) и Word (7 класс). Приобретенные навыки помогут им в учебе и в дальнейшей жизни.

Mr. Aleksandr Tsarev (Biology – Russian Program)

Сегодня расскажу об одной из наших традиций: каждый урок начинается с “5 простых вопросов по биологии”. Начинать эту традицию было непросто, ведь любой ответ на вопросы воспринимался как стресс и возможность получить двойку. Довольно быстро уровень стресса снизился, ведь по итогам ответов на эти вопросы ученик сам ставит оценку тому, насколько он ощущает свою осведомлённость. Довольно быстро журнал пополнился пятёрками и четверками, которые ребята в большинстве случаев себе ставили. Приятный сюрприз был в том, что при независимой автоматической оценке большинство учеников получили сходные баллы, что говорит о честности перед собой при проведении самооценивания. (Хотя, безусловно, встречаются и 5+ за 1 правильный ответ из пяти😊). Теперь перед началом урока я нередко вижу ребят, листающих тетрадь, а не соцсети. Полезная привычка!

На следующей неделе всех учеников ожидает “10 простых вопросов по биологии” вместо “5 простых вопросов по биологии”. Ведь, в конце концов, завершается полугодие и ребята уже смогут найти, в первую очередь для себя, ответ на вопрос “чему я научился за эти 4 месяца?”

Mr. Aleksey Golubev (Chemistry – Russian Program)

На этой неделе обучающиеся у10-у11 на занятиях по химии выполняли практические работы на темы: "Получение и свойства кислорода", "Получение соляной кислоты и изучение ее свойств". В ходе выполнения лабораторных опытов обучающиеся изучали свойства веществ, способы их получения, для этого им пришлось воспользоваться теоретическими знаниями, полученными ранее на занятиях. Также мы совершенствовали знания и умения в соблюдении всех правил техники безопасности.

Ms. Daria Zapryagayeva (History and Social Science – Russian Program)

Казалось бы, только недавно началась новая четверть, но вот она уже приближается к своему завершению.

Сегодня очень интересный день!
С year 7 продолжаем знакомиться с государствами Западной Азии. Сегодня прошли темы, посвящённые Палестине и Ассирийской державе. Теперь учащиеся знают, какое государство можно называть державой.

В year 8 на уроке истории у нас сегодня по плану была тема, посвящённая крестовым походам. Подробно разобрали данную тему на примере первого Крестового похода 1096-1099 гг.
На обществознании продолжаем знакомиться с видами деятельности: сегодня это было учение. В рамках темы также обсудили вопросы образования.

Year 9 богат на интересные темы. По истории изучили тему, посвящённую Английской революции 1640-1660 гг., определили её причины и ход событий.

В year 10 продолжаем постигать духовную сферу жизни общества, в рамках которой сегодня изучили тему, посвящённую образованию.

 
Следующая неделя будет максимально насыщенной: учащимся предстоит написать контрольные работы.

Notes from Primary

Dear Families,

We finished a fascinating week of visiting other countries for International Week. Primary students researched and presented about Kazakhstan, China and Finland. We also visited Poland, Thailand, and Egypt, which were prepared by Secondary students. It was a wonderful exchange! Students learned a lot and were very excited about what they presented.

Field Trips!

Petrovskaya Akvatoria

Children learned fun and interesting facts about historical St. Petersburg by way of a tour through a model of the city. Then they had a quiz that was in the format of a scavenger hunt. They had to find objects in the model, based on what they remembered from the tour.

Labirintum

Year 3-4 students went to a hands-on science museum. They got to experience a plasma ball and a Tesla machine. They saw a fire tornado and experiments, using various chemicals. Students also got to participate in experiments with electricity, one of which left them with their hair, literally, on end!

Петровская Акватория

Дети узнали веселые и интересные факты об историческом Санкт-Петербурге в ходе экскурсии по модели города. Затем, у них была викторина, которая прошла в формате поиска предметов. Дети должны были найти спрятанные предметы среди зданий макета, основываясь на том, что они запомнили из рассказа экскурсовода.

Лабиринтум

Студенты 3-4 классов отправились в музей науки. Они опробовали плазменный шар и машину Теслы. Также, они увидели огненный торнадо и проводили эксперименты, используя различные химические вещества. Ученики получили возможность участвовать в эксперименте с электричеством, который буквально поднял их волосы в воздух!

Детский сад/приемная = то же самое, что и Акт I

Год 1-6 = Праздничный свитер, джинсы, спортивная обувь

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

What an intense week that was! Organized by the students themselves, the International Week is an example of how CIS empowers students to learn and put into practice the academic hard and soft skills that will help them build their future success. One could see drama plays, quizzes, food, games, and other student-led activities that created a sense of festivity and community.

Дорогие Родители и Опекуны!

Эта неделя была богата  событиями! Международная неделя, организованная нашими студентами, является примером того, как CIS дает им  возможность изучать и применять на практике академические и  “гибкие” навыки (soft skills), которые помогут ученикам быть успешными в будущем. В эти дни в кампусе можно было посмотреть  драматические пьесы, увидеть викторины, национальную еду нескольких стран, игры и другие студенческие мероприятия, которые создавали ощущение праздника и общности.

Friday, students from Year 7 to Year 10 went on a field trip to the Kuntskamera as part of their Geography class. They learned a little bit more about the world and enjoyed a good time together as members of the school community. A big thank you to Mr. Watkins, Ms. Liuba and Mr. Donovan. Also, a big thank you to parents for sending your children in full uniform to the trip.

В пятницу студенты с Year 7 по Year 10 класс отправились на экскурсию в Кунсткамеру в рамках своего урока географии. Они узнали немного больше о мире и наслаждались хорошим времяпрепровождением вместе как участники школьного сообщества. Большое спасибо Мр. Уоткинсу, Мс. Любе и Мр. Доновану. Также большое спасибо всем родителям, что отправили своих детей на экскурсию  в школьной форме.

This week are starting our Charity Drive. We are collecting non-perishable food for those children in need. As we act together as a community to help children in need, the Student Council will be organizing activities and students will be earning House Points. I am counting on your support.

На этой неделе в средней/старшей школе начинается благотворительная акция. Мы будем собирать нескоропортящиеся продукты для нуждающихся детей. Действуя вместе как сообщество, мы будем помогать нуждающимся детям; Студенческий совет будет организовывать мероприятия, а студенты -  зарабатывать баллы. Я рассчитываю на вашу поддержку. Спасибо!

From the Classroom

Mr. Bethell (English, Literature, Global Perspectives)

Greetings parents and CIS community!  The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of editing and production as students transform first drafts into polished final products.

My year 7 group has compiled impressive autobiographies that are six-chapters long spanning their parents’ lives, their own early childhood, and culminating with their present CIS incarnations. I realise they’re still only eleven, but what exciting lives they’ve lived!

In year 8 the focus has been on diaries, first reading excerpts from Anne Frank and Wimpy Kid before writing, and then publishing their own humorous accounts of not-so-typical school days. Parents, please encourage your students to show you what they created!

Year 9 has been exploring ‘the dark side’ with a term focused on all things spooky and suspenseful. After reading works by Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe, and Roald Dahl, students wrote impressive suspense stories of their own which they also went on to publish using a software called Story Bird. We’ll start next week with a group recitation of our various contributions.

Last but not least, year 10 continues to grapple with the philosophical themes presented in Life of Pi.  Just yesterday students did an imitation of a chapter in which they explored one human characteristic in great depth – Varya looked at anger, while Sonya reflected on sadness. Their writing shows tremendous potential!

I’m looking forward to a strong December finish as we wrap up Unit 2 and transition to Unit 3.

Mr. Kenny (English as an Additional Language, Guided Study)

So, this term is now in full swing. Students have returned energised and ready to throw themselves into the new material with full gusto! In the first week, we discussed the previous term’s grades and used them to set ourselves some clear academic goals. Having done so, we got down to work on them and have been structuring lessons accordingly ever since. Each person’s goals differ – as do the individuality of them – based off how many members are in the group.

In addition, students have been actively participating in various other extracurricular activities, such as International Week, The Charity Drive, and House Meetings. We continue to work hard to achieve everything in a timely and successful fashion, to meet the coming winter holidays with a sense of satisfaction and pride.

Ms. Natalia (Russian Language and Literature  - Russian Program)

В year 9 на уроках начали изучение одной из сложнейших тем всего курса русского языка "Причастие". Ребята написали первую самостоятельную "Причастный оборот". Молодцы, все справились, и очень даже неплохо!

В year 12 на уроках литературы продолжаем читать и обсуждать роман Ф. М. Достоевского "Преступление и наказание". Какие страсти кипят вокруг главного героя романа, Родиона Раскольникова!!! Импонирует, что никто не остаётся в стороне, все стараются принимать участие.

В year 13 выпускники активно готовятся к итоговому сочинению, которое совсем скоро, 7 декабря: вспоминаем прочитанное, обсуждаем, учимся формулировать тезисы и выстраивать композицию сочинения.

Mr. Ruslan (Russian Language and Literature - Russian Program)

Начинаем самую короткую и в то же время самую насыщенную четверть в этом году. Вместе с Year 7 разбираем важный раздел русского языка “Лексика” и анализируем трагичный рассказ Тургенева “Муму”.
Вместе с Year 8 и Year 9 продолжаем знакомиться с лирикой великого поэта М. Ю. Лермонтова, вникая в его полную одиночества душу.
С Year 10 анализировали один из последних классических образцов русской романтической поэзии М. Ю. Лермонтова “Мцыри”.

Ms. Nina (Art)

This winter time we are preparing for Christmas. The high school has many projects to prepare school for the holiday. These are: the decorations - giant snowflakes,  posters on the theme of ballet, and the preparation of a zone for photography with ballerina and Nutcracker. Everyone works as one creative team.

Looking ahead, we have parent teacher conferences coming up soon, and rehearsals are underway for the Winter Concert. 

Upcoming Field Trip (Nov. 25) 

Students in Years 3-6 will pile onto at bus together on Friday morning and take off for two different excursions: 

Years 3-4 will head to Labirintum for a tour based on topics they are currently working on in Science.  

Years 5-6 will go to Petrovskaya Akvatoria, a miniature of historical St. Petersburg, in connection with their Art classes. 

Primary Parent Teacher Conferences (Nov. 29-30) 

We are organizing parent-teacher conferences for November 29-30 after the end of the school day, 16:00 – 17:00. Your class teachers and Specialist teachers will be in contact, regarding sign-up for specific times. 

Winter Concert: A Night at the Theater! 

The event will happen in two acts. Children should be wearing the following: 

Act I – formal   

Girls = white dress, white stockings, white dress shoes  

Boys = black bow tie, white shirt, black trousers, black dress shoes  

Act II – casual  

Everyone = Holiday-themed sweater, jeans, sport shoes  

Please note, the concert will be held on December 14.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Last week was the second week of our short Term 3. It was also a week dedicated to the fight against bullying. Students learned how to identify it and reflected on everyday measures they can take to help create a safer environment for everyone. I was also proud to see the large interest that our students showed in instruments of self-governance such as the Student Council (former Student Voice). Through this representative group students organized their participation in next week’s event: International Week. I am looking forward to visiting our students’ stands and learning more about the celebrated countries: Thailand (years 7, 8, and 10), Poland (years 9 and 13), and Egypt (years 11 and 12).

Прошедшая неделя была второй в текущем учебном периоде. нашей короткой четверти. Эта неделя была посвящена борьбе с буллингом. Студенты научились определять, что это такое, и подумали о повседневных мерах, которые они могут предпринять, чтобы помочь создать более безопасную среду для всех. Я также горжусь тем, что наши учащиеся проявили большой интерес к инструментам самоуправления, таким как Студенческий совет (бывший Студенческий голос). Finally, Winter seems to have finally found its way to St. Petersburg. It is important to make sure that your child is properly dressed for the weather and that they change their shoes to inside shoes upon entering the school building. Thank you for your support.

Field Trip / Экскурсия

This Friday November 25 our students from years 7, 8, 9, and 10 will visit the Kunstkamera as part of their Geography and History classes. If your child will take part of the field trip, I ask you to kindly return the signed permission slip by Wednesday, November 23. Thank you!

Planning starts early at Cambridge!

Teachers hold the first planning meeting for next year’s annual evening of art exhibition and auction! Imagine a chance to view and maybe purchase some incredibly talented works by our own students!

And this year, part of the proceeds will be donated to a local children’s charity!

Our event website will be launched around Christmas and the evening itself will be in March.

From the Classroom

Mr. Watkins (Geography, English, Global Perspectives)

The year 9 Geography class has commenced their unit on Africa, while exploring the terms ‘colonial’ and ‘imperial’ in more detail. The year 10 and 11 English classes are currently looking at letters, speeches, interviews, and narrative texts, while the year 12 English class is exploring argumentative and discursive writing. As usual, IELTS students are focussing on all four language skills, but speaking and writing have been the central focus of the term so far. The year 10 Global Perspective students are currently developing their ideas for their individual projects (after completing their team project last term).

Mr. Sickles (Coordinated Science, Biology)

In Year 10 Coordinated Sciences, we have begun our introduction to chemistry by looking at some basics from the atmosphere, in water and in the Earth's crust. We have been learning about patterns in the properties of metals, including conductivity and their reactivity with water, in Year 11 Coordinated Sciences. For Year 12 Biology, our focus has been on enzymes and different factors which affect their impact on reaction rate. We recently dissected a kidney in Year 13 Biology, as we finish up our learning about water level control and homeostasis.

Ms. Liuba (EAL and Russian Langauge)

This month Year 8 student Yakov B was introduced to Sergey Esenin’s poem about winter and its beauty. And next Wednesday he will have his chance to present this poem to some teachers who will be visiting our class.

In RAL class in Year 7 we are learning how to talk about our nearest and dearest – our family. We’ve been making our family trees as well as trying to get our heads around how to conjugate some Russian verbs!

Ms. Marina (Physical Education)

In 2nd term during PE lessons secondary students have started to play badminton. For the first week they have reviewed their knowledge, rules, and regulations about badminton as a sport and have practiced fundamental skills. For the next couple of weeks each secondary class will have their own badminton tournament. Every student in a class will have an opportunity to play with each classmate, winners in every year group will get house points.

Mr. Lyons (Mathematics and Physics)

A furious few weeks of study, despite the one-week break mean years 7-9 have made huge progress through their mathematics curriculum.

Year 7 students have demonstrated their dexterity with decimals, adding multiplication and division by powers of ten to their repetoire of skills, along with applying the four operations to decimals. It has been a long, hard slog to get to this point, but the result is 100% mastery of the topic.

Year 8 and 9 have pushed plenty to perfect their geometry in the last few weeks. Topics covered include internal and external angles of 2d shapes, parallel line rules and construction of triangles and bisectors using a pair of compasses. There was definitely some uncertainty about using a tool typically used for creating circles to create straight sided shapes, but barriers were broken down and the results speak for themselves.

Year 7 are excited to be starting our Chemistry topics as we have put Biology to bed for now. With adaptation and variation of species behind us, we are looking forward to learning all about properties of matter and the Earth, comparing metals and non-metals and possibly even performing some fiery experiments.

Mr. Claassen (Science, Chemistry)

So far this term the Year 8 class has learned about reproduction and growth. We started with the human reproductive system and how the female reproductive system is adapted to support the growth of new life. We then studied the changes that happen to your body and emotions during adolescence. After that we covered the menstrual cycle and fertilisation of a human egg. Finally, we looked at the effects that diet, drugs and disease can have on your body during growth and development.

The Year 9 class worked on Ecology in which they learned to construct and interpret food chains and food webs. They also studied how living things are adapted to their habitats and finished off with humans’ impact on the environment.

The Year 12 Chemistry class completed their study of atoms, molecules and the stoichiometry of these particles in reactions. They learned why we use relative instead of absolute masses when working with these tiny particles and then applied their knowledge of stoichiometry and relative mass to perform calculations using chemical equations. They also got comfortable with the nuts and bolts of doing titrations.

The Year 13 class covered further aspects of equilibria starting with the seemingly easy concept of conjugate acids and bases. We saw how pH rather than the names of the reactants is a better indicator of whether something is an acid or a base and that the equilibrium point indicates whether a solution is an acid or a base at a moment in time during a chemical reaction. This brought us to the importance of pK values and what they tell us about solutions.

Ms. Irina (Mathematics, Russian Program)

На уроках алгебры yr9 подобрались вплотную к такому понятию как функция. Функция - слово, от которого вздрагивают все старшеклассники и прячут глаза хорошисты. Но не в нашей школе! Ребята дружно работают на уроках и сдают домашние задания, учащиеся yr12, изучая тригонометрические функции, вынесли свой вердикт: “Это легко!”. А ученицы из yr13 спокойно расправляются с заданиями на функции из КИМов ЕГЭ. По геометрии yr12 готовятся к устному зачету и, надеюсь, не дрожат от ожидания этого мероприятия, потому что знание теории необходимо для практики, тем более, что многие из них выбрали для сдачи профильный ЕГЭ по математике.

Обычный субботний день: решаем математику!

Ms. Kristina (Mathematics and Physics, Russian Program)

Эта неделя была по-настоящему насыщенной! С y11 начали новую тему по геометрии - вектора. Параллельно с этим по физике изучаем законы Ньютона и применяем правила, изученные на уроках геометрии. С y10 закончили очень сложную и интересную тему про дроби. Ребята умеют теперь работать не только с обыкновенными дробями, но и с алгебраическими. На уроках физики с y7 изучили такие понятия, как равномерное и неравномерное движение, а также повторили переводы из одних единиц измерения в другие.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Last week, it was great to see several students coming back to school on time. This term is a short one, with the Assessment (Examination) Week starting on Monday, December 5, three weeks from now. It is paramount that students continue to come to school and do not miss any lessons. Together, as a School Community, we have come a long way during Term 1 in making sure we establish academic discipline, dynamic and effective communication channels, and set high, but reachable expectations for our students and ourselves. Your help has been extremely valuable, and we therefore heavily rely on your support so we can continue our path towards excellence. Thank you for your support in making sure that homework is completed on-time and with good quality. Thank you for supporting your child in coming to school on-time and wearing the school uniform (appropriate clothing and appropriate colors, or the official school uniform). Thank you as well for sending absence notes via EduPage when your child is absent. Thank you for your efforts in making our morning drop-off area even safer for your children.

This short term will end very soon; thank you for helping your child make the most of it.

This week will is our 2022 Anti-bullying week. Student will identify and reflect on bullying and learn specific steps that can be taken to stop it from happening. In order to celebrate our differences and commonalities, tomorrow we will hold our Odd Socks Day. During this day, students wear different socks as symbol of community and celebration of our own uniqueness within it.

На прошлой неделе мне было приятно видеть, что ученики вернулись в школу вовремя после каникул. Текущий учебный период – короткий, а экзаменационная неделя начинается в понедельник, 5 декабря, через три недели. Крайне важно, чтобы учащиеся продолжали ходить в школу и не пропускали уроки. Вместе, как школьное сообщество, мы прошли долгий путь в течение первого учебного периода, убедившись, что мы установили академическую дисциплину, динамичные и эффективные каналы связи, а также высокие, но достижимые цели ожидания для наших студентов и нас самих. Ваша помощь была чрезвычайно ценной, и поэтому мы в значительной степени полагаемся на Вашу поддержку, чтобы продолжать путь к усовершенствованию школы. На этой неделе мы отмечаем Неделю борьбы с буллингом. Учащиеся научатся распознавать буллинг и будут размышлять о том, какие конкретные шаги можно предпринять, чтобы предотвратить это неприятное явление. Чтобы отпраздновать наши индивидуальность и сходства, завтра мы проведем День странных (непарных) носков. В течение этого дня студенты будут носить разные (непарные) носки как символ сообщества и празднования собственной уникальности в нем.

Mr. Loreiro (Spanish)

This week we have worked on vocabulary related to the world of work, about our tastes or the sports we play. We have worked on grammatical content such as comparatives, present and past tenses (regular and irregular verbs), frequency expressions, connectors to order texts about our routine, etc.

We have continued to work in a context of differentiation and online classes. The EduPage and Zoom platforms facilitate this work and allow the coordination of levels. The use of the Epic! platform has also been included to work on reading in Spanish, as well as differentiation in the classroom. The platform has a considerable amount of books and videos in Spanish, accompanied by comprehension activities.

Mr. Alm (English, English Literature, Global Perspectives)

Year 13 English continues to explore the topic of child language acquisition. Students have completed looking at the major theories of Behaviourism, Nativism, Cognitivism, and Social-interactionalism. In addition, they are preparing activities to perform with the students in primary classes. Observing the students perform the activities will not only help build school community, but also provide the Year 13 students an opportunity to apply their knowledge of the subject and see first hand how language skills develop over time.

The Year 12 English Literature class has begun the drama unit. We will analyse how Tennessee Williams uses the dramatic form to convey messages related to the themes of greed, social mores, deceit, mendacity, repression and death from his 1955 Pulitzer Prize winning play, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

In Year 11 English Literature, students have completed their poetry unit centred around the work of Ted Hughes. We will begin a unit on prose. In this unit, students will read a collection of short stories that are representative of different literary movements, geographical locations, and time periods. Students will not only learn about stylistic techniques and the context of each piece, but also identify how universal themes are presented across these works.

Ms. Nina (Art)

Year 12 draw a still life in the style of Dutch masters. Students apply previously acquired knowledge of drawing three-dimensional objects. Students of the 10th-11th year of study finish the topic in watercolor. They create an artwork in the style of Mats Gustavsen. Students of the 9th year of study got acquainted with linocut . They invented, cut out and printed their first works. 7-8 year immersed in the study of various techniques of working with gouache, and also at the design lesson, a hat was created and decorated.

Mr. Jenkins (History)

Lessons continue apace: KS3 are especially pleasing with their focus, and output; we’ve put some pleasing posters on the classroom walls which highlight this. 

Year 11 is progressing well as they prepare for their IGCSE tests at the end of the year; classwork on the industrial revolution by year 9 is very pleasing. 

Year 13s are starting to produce some insightful written content to go with their excellent verbal contributions in lessons. 

Mr. Cárdenas (Mathematics)

Intense activity during the last few weeks in Mathematics: Year 11 students had their first introduction to calculus by learning about derivatives and how to use them to find stationary points. Year 12 students continued their studies on series and Newton’s Binomial and its link to combinatorics and probability. Year 13 students learned how to solve equations using numerical methods when analytical methods cannot be applied. At the same time, Year 10 students learned about the quadratic equation and how to use it to solve equations. Very intense week from Day One. Thank you for coming to school on Monday.

Mr. Donovan (Business, Geography, Global Perspectives)

Students have completed their first chapters comprehensively. Thus, they are engaged in summative assessments this week. This is where an accurate grade is given based on their knowledge of the curriculum. Geography students will apply their knowledge and skills in mapwork and understanding of rivers. Business students will have tests in a similar format to their mock examinations to better prepare them for what is to come. Global perspectives students will be presenting the international festivals that they find interesting.

Ms. Victoria (ICT and Computer Science)

In the new term, secondary students began to work on a practical topic that will give them the necessary skills to work with office programs such as MS Word, Excel, Access.

However, this week we devoted ourselves to reviewing the principles of working with the main components of the interface of the two main operating systems: Windows and MacOS and file management principles. This knowledge will be useful for working on a computer at school and in everyday life, as well as give the necessary understanding when working with any application that creates documents.

В новой четверти ученики старшей школы начали работать над практической темой, которая даст им необходимые навыки работы с офисными программами такими как MS Word, Excel, Access.

Тем не менее эту неделю мы посвятили повторению принципов работы с основными компонентами интерфейса двух основных операционных систем и организацию файлов на компьютере. Mr. Aleksandr (Biology – Russian Program)

Хотелось бы начать с не самой приятной темы: посещаемость уроков в периоды до и после каникул. Одни ученики уехали за несколько дней до каникул, другие вернулись спустя неделю после каникул. Их одноклассники за это время успевают пройти новые темы, получить новые знания и достичь определенных успехов. Пропуск уроков мешает как успехам того, кто пропустил уроки, так и успехам его одноклассников, вынужденных останавливаться на повторении дольше, чем им это нужно.

В октябре-ноябре мы изучали всё, от жизненного цикла вирусов до способов спрятаться от “5 простых вопросов по биологии”

Эволюция - тема, которая проходит красной нитью через всё обучение биологии. Ведь и внешний вид растений, и особенности поведения животных, и строение позвоночника человека - результаты биологической эволюции. Ниже представлены фото из рубрики “Эволюционируем как можем”. Mr. Alexey (Chemistry – Russian Program)

В этом году обучающимся year 10 предстояло познакомиться с новым учебным предметом «Химия», а обучающимся year 12 – с новым, более сложным разделом химии – «Органическая химия».

За данный период обучения обучающиеся year 10 узнали основные химические элементы ПСХЭ Д.И. Менделеева, которые в дальнейшем будут встречаться по школьной программе, классификацию веществ; валентность, признаки химических реакций, научились работать с ПСХЭ Д.И. Менделеева, вычислять относительную молекулярную массу вещества, массовую долю элемента в веществе, массовые соотношения, составлять формулы веществ по валентности, давать названия, уравнивать химические реакции.

Обучающиеся year 12 узнали основные положения теории химического строения органических веществ А.М. Бутлерова; классификацию органических веществ, гомологический ряд алканов и циклоалканов, их физические и химические свойства, способы получения в лаборатории и промышленности, научились давать названия углеводородам, записывать изомеры, осуществлять цепочку превращений в виде уравнений химических реакций, решать задачи.

Ms. Daria (Social Science and History – Russian Program)

Началась вторая четверть, и мы активно включаемся в образовательный процесс. С учениками 7y продолжаем путешествие по страницам истории Древнего Египта. Сегодня познакомились с такими могущественными фараонами Египта, как Тутмос III и Рамсес II. Впереди все самое интересное: вот-вот начнем изучать Древнее Междуречье!

С учениками 8y продолжаем изучать средневековье. Сегодня учащиеся изучили тему, посвященную феодальным отношениям, а после совершили экскурсию в средневековую деревню и узнали, как и чем жили люди в деревнях.

9y класс сегодня на уроке изучил тему, посвященную Реформации в Европе. Учащиеся смогли самостоятельно выделить причины Реформации, проанализировать «95 тезисов» Мартина Лютера. На следующем занятии мы посмотрим, как Реформация распространялась в Европе, познакомимся с Королевской реформацией и кальвинизмом, а также узнаем, что такое «Контрреформация».

С учениками 10y на уроке по обществознанию начали изучать большой раздел, посвященный духовной сфере жизни. Познакомились с такими видами культуры, как массовая, народная и элитарная. Теперь учащиеся могут различать массовую и элитарную культуру и приводить примеры каждой из них.

Also on Friday, Oct. 28, you received your last Term 1 Week Ahead letters and photos from your classroom teachers. There were lots of great festival photos!

Festival Feedback

Primary students looked fabulous in their costumes! They had great fun, showing off their costume creativity and judging the pumpkins, made by Secondary students.

Primary pumpkins were on display throughout the main school reception area. Designs ranged from super spooky to silly to downright adorable.

Harvest Table – Thank you so much for your charity donations. This week, donations will be delivered to Nochlezhka. This is our first round of donations for the year, and we are looking to be able to support various organizations in the area in future. We will be happy to hear your suggestions for organizations. If you have a suggestion, please contact your classroom teachers or the school secretary.

International Week (November 22-24)

Last year, we held an International Day in May. This year, we are organizing for a couple of days, and they are coming up fast!

What made last year's experience extra special was the involvement of parents, who were interested in sharing their knowledge and love of different cultures with others. For example, we had a Russian room that was themed with movie classics and a Korean photo booth and game room. It was a fun, creative outlet for parents and a special treat for students.

This year, we encourage you to reach out and let us know if you would like to help and/or have an idea for a country room. You can help with a country to which you have travelled or where you’ve lived, or one you just really like.

Please let your classroom teachers know if you are interested in participating.

Отзывы о Фестивале

Ученики начальной школы выглядели сказочно в своих костюмах! Они очень весело провели время, демонстрируя свои творчески подготовленные костюмы и оценивая тыквы, сделанные учениками средней школы.

Тыквы, которые принесли ученики начальной школы, были выставлены в разных местах в главной приемной школы. Дизайн варьировался от крайне жуткого до глупого или совершенно очаровательного.

Стол урожая – Большое спасибо за Ваши пожертвования для благотворительности! На этой неделе они будут доставлены в Ночлежку. Это наш первый раунд пожертвований за год, и мы надеемся, что сможем поддержать различные организации в этом районе в будущем. Мы будем рады услышать Ваши предложения относительно пожертвований для таких организаций. Если у Вас есть предложения, то пожалуйста, свяжитесь с учителями из Вашего класса или школьным секретарем.

Международная неделя (22-24 ноября)

В прошлом году мы провели Международный день в мае. В этом году мы хотим провести несколько Международных дней, и они быстро приближаются!

В прошлом году этот опыт был особенным, благодаря участию родителей, которые хотели поделиться с другими своими знаниями и любовью к различным культурам. Например, у нас была русская комната, посвященная классике кино, корейская фотобудка и игровая комната. Это был веселый, творческий опыт для родителей и особое удовольствие для учеников.

В этом году мы хотели бы попросить Вас связаться с нами и сообщить, желаете ли Вы помочь и /или поделиться идеей, как украсить класс по образу определенной страны. Вы можете поделиться впечатлениями о стране, куда путешествовали или в которой жили, или которая Вам просто очень нравится.

Mr. Cafferkey (Business and Economics)

This week Year 13 ECONOMICS class investigated the Keynesian MULTIPLIER EFFECT in a very practical way. The question was “is money spent or does it circulate and how do different consumption/saving propensities play out? “

Using a cash injection of 1000 euro to 1 student, the class developed several different scenarios whereby different political, economic, and psychological situations would affect the propensity to consume goods and services and the propensity to save money.

For instance, in times of political turmoil the marginal propensity to save (MPS) will be high. We looked at the effect of an MPS at 80% and an MPC (marginal propensity to consume) of only 20%. The total multiplier effect in this situation is only +250 euro or a multiplier effect of 0.25. So not a good result. But we still had 1000 euro in the bank.

What about an economy in more happier times which just needs a little stimulation? We looked at the effect of a MPC of 80% and a MPS of 20% using the same 1000-euro cash injection. What a difference! We still have the 1000 euro invested in saving but we have also magically created CONSUMPTION of +4000 euro, a multiplier effect of 4.0!

So, what did the students learn? That CONSUMERS are irrational and that MARKETS are affected as much by PSYCHOLOGY as they are by money supply. ECONOMICS is a subject about behaviour as much if not more than about MATHS.

This week children have already begun to actively prepare for the winter concert. We sing our various musical programs, play instruments and discuss interesting details of our big upcoming event.

In the second term, we will not only continue to rehearse in classes, but we will also organize general rehearsals, where children will sing in several classes, and our instrumentalists will accompany their classmates.

Mr. Bethell (English and Global Perspectives)

Hello everyone!  It’s been a fruitful and exciting time in our various English classes these past few weeks.

Our year 7 students created travel brochures about cities that interested them spanning from Yakutsk and St. Petersburg to London and Los Angeles.  Their end products reflected considerable thought and creativity.  Next up we’ve got an autobiography unit that will include a simultaneous reading of Roald Dahl’s acclaimed Boy.

In year 8, students completed a week-long “Choose Your Own Adventure” project that required them to write stories with multiple opportunities for choice and varying endings.  After a rigorous drafting process, they created artistic 16-page mini books that we shared as a class.  Our new unit focuses on diary writing and is paired with the reading of sections from The Diary of Anne Frank.

To coincide with the Halloween spirit, year 9 students recently began a unit on horror, suspense, and the macabre.  We began with a close reading of Mark Twain’s spoof on the genre, “A Ghost Story” and during the holiday students will be expected to compose their own scary stories.

Finally, our year 10 iGCSE literature group continues to grapple with the philosophical novel A Life of Pi.  Sonya and Varya wrote excellent essays considering the religious aspects of the first part, and when we return from break, we’ll dive into the more substantial second section that involves a tiger and a lifeboat!

Thanks for all your hard work, students!  It’s been a pleasure working with you all.

Mr. Kenny (English)

So the final week in EAL saw us wrap up the term’s themes by writing their end of term tests, finishing off various works and- of course- getting ready for Halloween! Once the official work had been completed and the final marks were set, we somewhat indulged ourselves in the holiday spirit.

On Thursday, we recapped on some spooky vocabulary, separated into groups and set about coming up with our very own spooky stories! We even played some wind sound-effects in the background to enhance the effect.

Then, of course, came the parade itself- a wonderful chance to culminate the excitement and build up to such an important event in the western calendar. There were costumes, pumpkins, a parade- all of which provided ample opportunity to experience such an occasion. Most importantly of all, the whole celebration was in English!

We’re now looking forward to setting academic goals for the coming quarter, then going for them.

Ms. Natalia (Russian Language and Literature)

На уроках русского языка в year 9 на последней неделе царил небольшой творческий беспорядок. Ребята составляли собственные рассказы, используя заданные учителем шаблоны с изученными орфограммами. Стоит отметить, что получалось очень смешно и интересно, в некоторых рассказах царил чёрный юмор – Halloween дает о себе знать.

Учащиеся year 12 закончили изучение творчества русского драматурга Н.А.Островского. Многие реалии XIX века трудно понять современному поколению, поэтому проблематику пьесы «Гроза» обсуждали достаточно бурно, споры по поводу поступка Катерины были жаркие: каждый высказывал свою точку зрения, старался убедить остальных.

На уроках литературы с year 13 читали «Гранатовый браслет» Куприна А.И. и говорили о любви, жертвенной, бескорыстной и великодушной… и без дискуссии в этом вопросе, конечно , не обошлось.

Mr. Ruslan (Russian Language and Literature)

Последняя неделя перед каникулами была довольно плодотворной. На уроках русского языка в Year 7 ребята вспоминали и изучали тему «Способы словообразования», при этом, не забывая разминаться в орфоэпических упражнениях. Помимо этого, ребята выполняли задания на развитие речи.  На уроках литературы дети познакомились с веселой, но в то же время устрашающей повестью Н.В.Гоголя «Заколдованное место». В преддверии праздника Хэллоуина это задало интересный настрой!
Year 8 трудился на этой неделе не покладая рук. Особенно большую работу дети выполнили в ходе темы «Правописание сложных имен существительных». Результат порадовал всех! На уроках литературы мы закончили чтение и анализ «Дубровского» А.С.Пушкина. Впереди – увлекательнейшая повесть «Выстрел».
Year 9 на уроках литературы выступали судьями героини повести Пушкина «Станционный смотритель». Свой вердикт они вынесут в сочинении по этому произведению.
Year 10 на уроках русского языка приступили к изучению раздела «Второстепенные члены предложения». Тема, знакомая еще с начальной школы, оказалось преподнесла ученикам немало сюрпризов. А на уроках литературы мы закончили изучение исторического романа А.С.Пушкина «Капитанская дочка». Теперь ребятам нужно будет излить на бумаге свои мысли и впечатления о прочитанном.

 

Mr. Vladimir (Geography – Russian Program)

Приветствуем из мира географии!
Ребята из Year 7 уже научились ориентироваться на местности по местным признакам и отправились в удивительное путешествие по материкам, бороздя просторы морей и океанов. В компании финикийцев и викингов, древних ученых, мореплавателей и первопроходцев, ученики движутся вперед за новыми знаниями.

С учениками из Year 8 мы изучаем элементы топографических карт и планов, рассматриваем аэрофотоснимки и изучаем рельеф нашей планеты из космоса. На данный момент нам пришлось спуститься с верхних слоев атмосферы для того, чтобы начать изучение строения земного шара.

С Year 9 мы закончили большой блок “Атмосфера”, в рамках которого изучили “Пояса планеты”, узнали, что у нашей планеты есть пояс давления, освещенности, температуры и даже осадков. Изучали воздушные массы и климатические пояса, узнали, что означает приставка “СУБтропики" и навсегда запомнили, что это не суп, но чувство голода от этого не уменьшилось. А еще мы теперь очень хорошо разбираемся в климатообразующих факторах и знаем, что климат не меняется так быстро, как об этом говорят вокруг. Изучив большой объем информации, мы переходим к блоку: “Мировой Океан”

Ребята из Year 10 изучают географию России, в последние две недели акцент делаем на природных компонентах, изучаем геологическое и тектоническое строение, стараемся разобраться в геологическом летоисчислении, подключая геохронологическую шкалу и дополнительную информацию в виде геологических карт. На уроках очень много говорим об общих чертах рельефа, ищем закономерности в образовании полезных ископаемых в разных уголках нашей страны. Еще один очень важный аспект, это контакт человека с литосферой. Разбираем примеры рационального и нерационального использования природных ресурсов различного происхождения.

Year 11, так же как и Year 10, продолжают изучать географию России, но уже со стороны демографических, экономических и политических аспектов. Проходим социальные темы, такие как: “Численности населения России",”Размещение населения”, “Миграции", “Сельская и городская форма расселения”, “Этнический и религиозный состав населения". Уже совсем скоро, в следующей четверти мы приступим к изучению отраслей хозяйства России и не обойдем стороной экономические особенности нашей страны.

Year 12 плодотворно и кропотливо изучали расовый, этнический и религиозный состав населения мира. Повторили и ознакомились с мировыми, национальными и местными религиями, узнали в чем различие между ними и какие народы их исповедуют. Детально изучили термины “этнос” и “народ”, определили принципиальное различие между ними. Также, каждый урок мы начинаем с тренировки по расположению стран мира и их столицам, в это элементе урока участвуют все и это вызывает у ребят особый интерес.

С Year 13 мы перешли к изучению Англосаксонской Америки. На данном этапе мы изучаем Канаду. Конечно же затрагиваем исторические события, благодаря которым сформировалась современная Канада, изучаем политическое устройство, государственный строй, природные ресурсы, население и хозяйство этой страны.

The end of Term 1 is almost here, and students have a busy week ahead of them.

Excursions

We are happy to say that we have had our first excursions of the year. Last Friday, classes from Primary and Secondary boarded a bus and drove to their respective field trip destinations

Our Early Years classes combined with Years 1 and 2 for a field trip to the Zoo. Students got to spend some time outdoors, exploring and learning about the animals who live there.

Autumn Festival Reminders

We are looking forward to seeing your decorated pumpkins, starting tomorrow.

Charity Drive – Please bring in non-perishable goods like canned or boxed food. The Harvest Table will be set up in the main reception area. Please make sure your class teacher knows how many boxes or cans of food your child brought in. They will receive a House Point for each item they bring.

Thursday will be our assembly and costume parade. We are all looking forward to seeing all kinds of colorful characters walking around school.

Friday, October 28, is our last day of this Term. We will have a non-uniform day.

Экскурсии

Мы рады сообщить, что у нас прошли первые в этом году экскурсии. В прошлую пятницу классы начальной и средней школы сели в автобус и отправились в увлекательные поездки.

Наши дошкольники вместе с классами Year 1 и Year 2 побывали в зоопарке. Ученики провели время гуляя на свежем воздухе, исследуя и изучая животных, которые там живут.

Напоминание об Осеннем Фестивале

Мы с нетерпением ждем Ваши украшенные тыквы, начиная с завтрашнего дня.

Для участия в Благотворительной Акции, пожалуйста, принесите нескоропортящиеся продукты, такие как консервы или упакованные продукты. Стол сбора урожая будет установлен в зале центрального входа (ресепшен). Пожалуйста, обратите внимание на то, чтобы классный руководитель знал, сколько коробок или банок с едой принес Ваш ребенок. Дети получают House Point за каждый предмет, который принесли.

This last week was full of activity, as the last weeks of school usually are. We had term assessments, homework catch-up, and exam re-takes. Teachers were also busy preparing the report cards that you will receive this coming Friday.

School Trip / Школьная экскурсия

Last week our English Literature students went to a field trip to the Anna Akhmatova Museum, accompanied by Mr. Alm and Mr. Bethell. The students learned about the Russian poet’s life and work and slightly immersed in the world of 20^th Century literature.

На прошлой неделе наши студенты, изучающие литературу, отправились на экскурсию в Музей Анны Ахматовой в сопровождении Мр. Альма и Мр. Бетелла. Студенты узнали о жизни и творчестве русского поэта и с интересом погрузились в мир литературы ХХ века.

Parent-Teacher Conferences / Родительские собрания

Tomorrow Tuesday, October 25^th at 15.40 we will start this term’s Parent-Teacher Conferences. I want to thank those parents and caregivers who have already signed up via EduPage (Menu Registration -> Parent-Teacher Conferences.)  If you have not signed up yet, but still want to learn more about your child’s learning and talk directly to their teachers, you can still reserve a slot via EduPage; you can also come directly to the school library at 15:40. Please do not forget to bring your school badge with you. See you there!

Harvest (Autumn) Festival / Осенний фестиваль (фестиваль урожая)

We continue to collect non-perishable food (preferably canned foods) as part of this year’s Autumn Festival. For every five cans your child brings to the Harvest Table, his House will receive a House token (point). The winner House will be announced after the November break. This is an appropriate time to share with those less fortunate that us. Thank you for your participation!

It is also worth mentioning that some students are already actively carving their pumpkins for the pumpkin-carving contest that will take place as part of our celebrations. Your child can bring their carved pumpkin beginning this Tuesday. The contest will take place after the costume parade.

As part of our celebrations, students are encouraged to come to school in costumes this coming Thursday October 27. We will have a Costume Parade and have healthy fun as we dress for the festival.

Мы продолжаем собирать нескоропортящиеся продукты (желательно консервы) в рамках Осеннего фестиваля в этом году. За каждые пять банок, которые Ваш ребенок приносит к «Столу урожая», его Дом будет получать Жетон Дома (балл). Дом-победитель четверти будет объявлен после ноябрьских каникул. Сейчас самое время поделиться с теми, кому повезло меньше, чем нам. Спасибо большое за участие!

Стоит также отметить, что некоторые студенты уже активно вырезают свои тыквы для конкурса резьбы по тыкве, который пройдет в рамках наших осенних праздников. Ваш ребенок может принести свою резную тыкву, начиная с этого вторника. Конкурс состоится после костюмированного парада.

В рамках осенних торжеств учащимся предлагается прийти в школу в костюмах в предстоящий четверг - 27 октября. В школе пройдет парад костюмов – это увлекательное мероприятие, когда у детей будет возможность  надеть интересный костюм для фестиваля.

From the Classroom / Новости из класса

Mr. Watkins (English and Geography)

The year 9 Geography class has wrapped up a unit relating to earthquakes, volcanoes, and continental structures. This included a team project (completed in various groups). The year 10 and 11 English classes have been refining their summarising and directed writing skills, while also exploring implicit and explicit concepts within various texts. The year 12 English class has been exploring directed response, text analysis, as well as extended writing. The year 10 Global Perspectives class is currently wrapping up their team essay/report, in which all students were assigned a specific section to research and elaborate on (based on a chosen topic). The year 13 IELTS class has wrapped up their assessments based on the main language skills, namely - speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Various students received house points due to producing an exceptional quality of work.

Mr. Sickles (Science, Biology)

In Year 11, we have been exploring different factors that affect the rates of reaction and what methods we can use to test the impact of these factors.  We are finishing up our learning about biological molecule basics in Year 12 Biology.  Our practical focus was on serial dilution and testing for different biological molecules in food samples.  For Year 13 Biology, we just finished our in-depth look at photosynthesis and now are focusing on homeostasis, particularly how our bodies regulate water and glucose levels.

Ms. Liubov Kaporskaya (Russian as and Additional Language)

This week in Russian as an Additional Language (RAL) in Year 8 we read texts about Nature and how important it is to preserve and protect it. We also got acquainted with a poem by Fyodor Tyutchev dedicated to autumn and Tsarskoe Selo.

With RAL students in year 7 and year 10 we learned to count to 199! While with the year 9 student, we talked about various holidays and what presents you can give for different occasions.

Ms. Marina Vorobyeva (Physical Education)

In October secondary students are doing their Basketball unit. The first few lessons of this unit students spent developing and improving the skills needed to play both defensively and offensively. The students practiced dribbling and passing the ball using a range of different techniques. Defensively, they developed their skills of marking. Offensively, they learned how to get free from a defender, how to shield the ball and the skill of pivoting. During the rest of the unit students play competitive games, modified where appropriate, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending in the context of basketball.

Next week we are going to have Table Tennis Tournament. It is going to take place during morning breaks and every student can participate.

Mr. Lyons (Mathematics, Science, and Physics)

Key Stage 3 mathematics is as much about learning the language as it is being able to perform the math itself. In year 7, we have so far consolidated our understanding and application of the four operations, now with negative integers thrown into the mix, and introduced some key principles of algebra, such as identifying terms, expressions and equations, being able to simplify expressions and solve equations.

Year 8 have built upon their knowledge of operations and calculations by introducing decimals and integers, specifically working with multiplication and division by powers of ten. The class has also taken a forray into the tricky world of factorisation with some very pleasing results!

Year 9 have been grinding through some tough algebra tasks, culminating in their first experience of simultaneous equations which they took in their stride. We shall see how they cope with quadratics in the coming weeks...

Science in year 7 has been all about life – what it means to be living, what we are made up of, how different organs work together to create an organism, how organisms differ and how we can recognise and classify those differences. Every class is a hotbed of activity and inquisition with many a fascinating argument raised.

Last, but not least, year 12 Physics has, despite the entire class becoming injured for a month, made good progress on the kinetics, dynamics and forces topics. With some really juicy content coming up in electronics, there will be plenty of opportunities for more fun and interesting practical work to support the intense theory.

Mr. Claassen (Science, Chemistry)

The students have done a lot of good and hard work during the first term, the emphasis being on ‘a lot’.

The Year 8 class learned about how organisms obtain their food as well as the respiratory and circulatory systems. We did some practical activities on the effect of the intensity of light on photosynthesis as well as the relationship between heart rate and exercise. Needless to say there was some thoroughly tired students at the end of the second activity!

The Year 9 class studied photosynthesis in a bit more detail and how the products of photosynthesis relates to plant growth. They then went on to investigate how plants reproduce. They investigated how light intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis, the effect of wing size and shape on seed dispersal, tested for the presence of starch in beans and are also busy looking after some seeds to see if the presence of moisture is required for seeds to germinate.

The Year 12 Chemistry class have just started their A-Levels and are getting used to the idea that ‘Electrons in atoms’ can make up a whole chapter of their textbook! They started off recapping what the structure of an atom looks like and how we need multiple scientific models to try and understand their structure. As mentioned earlier they then moved on to electrons and the key role these particles with negligible mass play in Chemistry. We are currently busy working with the stoichiometry of chemical reactions and how this simple concept opens up a whole field of theoretical chemistry that will be the core of everything we learn going forward.

The Year 13 Chemistry class have been working hard on understanding what lattice energy is and the enthalpy changes required in turning ions into a solid lattice. We’re currently working on all the applications of electrolysis and how this separation technique has enhanced our understanding of Chemistry as a whole. We’ve revisited how to do titrations since and are busy working on an electrolysis experiment.

Ms. Irina Tuzakova (Russian Program Mathematics)

Предпоследняя неделя учебы: пора подводить итоги.

Yr9 в этом году  начали изучать два новых предмета по математике — алгебру и геометрию. Вводятся новые понятия, новые методы решений, новые формы записи. По геометрии материал казался знакомым с курса 5-6 классов и с кембриджской программы, однако, приемы решений в буквах вызвал удивление. По первой изученной главе “Введение в геометрию” ребята написали проверочную работу. Интересным оказался следующий факт: правильное решение задач среднего и повышенного уровня, тогда как простейшие задачи поставили учеников в тупик.

Yr12 знакомятся с новым разделом по алгебре — “Тригонометрия”. Ребята пишут много самостоятельных работ, чтобы отследить свои успехи и исправить неудачи. Сегодня точно можно сказать: тригонометрический круг знают все студенты этого курса! Это важно, потому что далее им предстоит углубитьтся в этот раздел и решать достаточно сложные задания.

Ms. Kristina Seravnina (Russian Program Mathematics and Physics)

На этой неделе на уроках физики ребята из Y9 работали в группах, изучая такие понятия как диффузия и броуновское движение. Дети искали ответы на следующие вопросы: почему сахар растворяется в чае и почему мы видим пылинки, двигающиеся в воздухе на свету. Задача учащихся заключалась в изучении темы, подготовке плаката и объяснении ее одноклассникам. Ребята подготовили интересные и яркие плакаты, которые сделали их презентацию максимально понятной и запоминающейся. Работа в группах направлена на развитие социального взаимодействия, они учатся не только самостоятельно изучать тему, но и приходить к компромиссу и вместе создавать яркие идеи. Урок прошел весело и дружелюбно, как и все уроки в нашей школе!

Mr. Alexander Lomov (Russian Program History and Social Science)

Всем привет! Немного новостей с кафедры Истории и Социальных наук.
1. Y10 заканчивает изучение эпохи Петра Великого. Для нашего кампуса это особенная тема, ведь Санкт-Петербург - детище императора, "окно в Европу". Сенат, Синод, Коллегии, Полтавская битва - эти термины определили исторический выбор России, актуальный и по сей день.
2. Y11 провел немало времени изучая внешнюю политику России в начале XIX века. Мы много обсуждали личности императора Александра Первого и Наполеона Бонапарта, спорили о явных и скрытых целях, которые ставили себе два этих незаурядных человека.
3. Y12 последние несколько уроков, в рамках изучения обществознания, постигали основы культурологического анализа. Мы проговорили важные моменты, связанные с пониманием специфики поп культуры, контркультуры, массовой культуры. Выделили плюсы и минусы этих явлений.

Кафедра Истории и Социальных наук желает ребятам продуктивных каникул и новых впечатлений. Скоро вторая четверть! Работаем!

As we begin our last two weeks of Term 1, we look forward to a little bit of celebration.

Autumn Festival – October 27

This year, we will celebrate all things Autumnal on Thursday, October 27. Here are some of the activities we are putting together.

Charity Drive – We will collect goods for a partnering organization. More information about this will be sent separately.

Pumpkin-decorating Contest – This is a favorite. Families decorate pumpkins at home, and children bring them in to school.  

Costumes – Let’s dress up! We encourage children to dress in costume for the day. As a reminder, please make sure to leave costume weapons at home.

Week Ahead

Primary teachers have a slightly new format for their weekly communication to parents. It’s called the Week Ahead, and will focus more on upcoming activities and learning topics.

After School Pick-up Reminders

Your children’s safety is our number one priority while they are on campus. This includes the time when children are being picked up from school. It’s a responsibility we take very seriously. This is why we have a few safety rules that we ask everyone to understand and follow.

There are a lot of cars in our parking lot, some moving, some standing still. As we all know about children, especially younger children, their speed and direction can often change in the blink of an eye. We adults must be hyper-vigilant to the location of children, and we all must be able to react in a moment’s notice.

Therefore, we would greatly appreciate it if at home you also reinforce these safety rules.

Primary students:

• Please walk at all times. We know students are happy and excited to see their parents, but they need to walk, keeping their movements slower and more predictable.
• Primary students must be accompanied by an adult when crossing the road.

Parents, nannies, drivers:

• Please drive slowly. The posted speed limit on the territory of the school is 5 km / hour. This is to increase the reaction time of a driver, should a child happen to fall or otherwise appear in front of your car.
• Please pull over to the curb to pick up your child. This is safer for them and keeps traffic moving smoothly.
• If your car is parked in a parking space across the street, please cross the street to the school building to accompany your child.

Напоминание о времени забора детей после школы

Безопасность Ваших детей является приоритетом номер один для нас, пока они находятся в кампусе. Это включает в себя время, когда детей забирают из школы. Это ответственность, к которой мы относимся очень серьезно. Вот почему у нас есть несколько правил безопасности, которые мы просим всех принять и соблюдать.

На нашей парковке много машин, некоторые движутся, некоторые стоят на месте. Как мы все знаем о детях, особенно о детях младшего возраста, их скорость и направление часто могут меняться в мгновение ока. Мы, взрослые, должны быть сверхбдительными к местонахождению детей, и мы все должны быть в состоянии реагировать в любой момент.

Last week was a very active week for both students and teachers. Teachers have been actively communicating with parents and posting grades via EduPage. Mr. Alm and Mr. Bethell are getting ready to take their students to the Anna Akhmatova Museum.

Прошлая неделя была очень активной как для студентов, так и для преподавателей. Преподаватели активно общаются с родителями и публикуют оценки через EduPage. Мр. Альм и Мр. Бетелл готовятся отвезти своих учеников в Музей Анны Ахматовой.

Houses / Система «Домов»

As you may know, each CIS student takes part in our House System. Each student is assigned a “house.” Houses are awarded “tokens” based on their member’s performance, behavior, and involvement in the School’s life. In St. Petersburg we have four Houses: Dostoyevsky, Scarlett Sails, Hermitage, and St. Petersburg. Some students decided to take part in the token design contest. The winner’s design will be printed out in the 3D printer and will be used as the school’s official “coin.” I wish good luck to all the participants.

Как вы, возможно, знаете, каждый студент СНГ принимает участие в нашей домашней системе. Каждому студенту присваивается «дом». Дома награждаются «жетонами» на основе успеваемости, поведения и их участия в жизни Школы. В Санкт-Петербурге у нас есть четыре Дома: Достоевский, Алые паруса, Эрмитаж и Санкт-Петербург. Uniform-Free Day / День без школьной формы

Once per week, students are allowed to come to school without the uniform but wearing school-appropriate clothing. I like the fact that many students make use of this opportunity and privilege. This is our way of saying “thank you” for your efforts in wearing the school uniform.

However, this privilege may be denied to those students who do not wear the school uniform during the week.

During those days that your child has PE class, please make sure that the sports clothing is free of any picture or text. Additionally, upper-body clothing cover should the whole upper body including the chest, shoulders, and abdominal area. Miniskirts are not part of the uniform and therefore are not allowed. T-shirts without buttons and collar are not part of the uniform and therefore are not allowed.

House points will be awarded for wearing the uniform, while phone calls home will be made for not complying with the school dress code.

Один раз в неделю учащимся разрешается приходить в школу без формы, но в подходящей для школу одежде. Мне нравится тот факт, что многие учащиеся пользуются этой возможностью и привилегией. Это наш способ сказать «спасибо» за Ваши усилия по ношению школьной формы.

Однако в этой привилегии может быть отказано тем ученикам, которые не носят школьную форму в течение недели.

В те дни, когда у Вашего ребенка есть занятия физкультуры, пожалуйста, убедитесь, что на спортивной одежде нет какой-либо картинки или текста. Кроме того, одежда верхней части тела должна покрывать всю верхнюю часть тела, включая грудь, плечи и область живота. Мини-юбки не являются частью униформы и поэтому не допускаются. Футболки без пуговиц и воротника не являются частью униформы и поэтому не допускаются.

Баллы системы домов будут начисляться за ношение униформы, и мы  в свою очередь  начнем звонить домой с напоминанием о необходимости соблюдать школьный дресс-код.

Mr. Loreiro (Spanish)

This week, and due to the proximity of the end-of-term exams, students have been reviewing the content seen in recent weeks. They have worked on the contents through the four skills (writing, reading, listening and speaking), doing different tasks and quizzes that the teacher has designed (ABCD, type in, sorting, connect pairs, open questions, etc.)

Some courses present different levels of competency in the classroom. On these occasions, the design of activities aims to make work times compatible. Thus, while some students performed speaking or listening tasks with the teacher, students at another proficiency level worked with their devices on controlled individual tasks.

Another challenge has been coordinating students who studied remotely with those who attended classes in person. The teacher has tried to enhance the work of students online by designing activities in EduPage that facilitate self-assessment and autonomous learning, without neglecting the integration of students in the class group through synchronous communication.

На этой неделе учащиеся повторяли материал, который изучали ранее, поскольку близится конец четверти и экзамены. Они трудились над навыками письма, чтения, аудирования и говорения, выполняя различные задачи и тесты, разработанные преподавателем (ABCD, ввод, сортировка, соединение пар, открытые вопросы и другие).

В некоторых классах учатся дети с разными уровнями владения испанским языком. В подобных случаях урок запланирован так, чтобы учащиеся работали вместе. Таким образом, в то время как одни студенты выполняли задания по разговорной речи или аудированию с преподавателями, учащиеся с другим языковым уровнем работали самостоятельно над индивидуальными задачами.

Mr. Kennedy (Business Studies and Geography)

As students have settled into their classes, they have become more confident in their social, academic, and sporting abilities. We have enjoyed playing football and volleyball at breaks and after school.

We have also been focused on the academic responsibilities that come with the first term. This is where the introductory topics and chapters come to their conclusion - with a culmination of new vocabulary and concepts that begin to be applied and practiced. Our Year 11 Business Studies students have been adequately planning, researching, and compiling a business plan as we believe that practice is key. Our geography students have become acclimatized to new concepts with an overview of the human, environmental, and political spheres of our planet. We look forward to what the rest of the year holds in store.

По мере того, как учащиеся осваиваются в своих классах, они становятся более уверенными в социальных, академических и спортивных способностях. Мы с удовольствием играем в футбол и волейбол на переменах и после школы. Также, мы сосредоточились на академической работе первой четверти. Именно сейчас завершаются вводные темы и разделы – с акцентом на новую лексику и концептуальные идеи, которые учащиеся начинают часто применять на практике. Поскольку мы считаем, что практика является ключевой компонентой курса, учащиеся Year 11 в курсе Business Studies активно планировали, исследовали и составляли бизнес-планы. Наши студенты-географы усвоили новые знания, относящиеся к человеческой, экологической и политической сферам нашей планеты. Мы с нетерпением ждем событий, ожидающих нас в оставшуюся часть года.

Mr. Jenkins (History)

History lessons across secondary have been pleasing thus far: the level of engagement, and discipline in all year groups has enabled students to produce some promising work; we’ve begun putting year 8 posters on the classroom walls.

Specific highlights in recent weeks would be source analysis work undertaken by year 11, who are studying the Cold War; homework on the industrial revolution by year 9, who learned about factory conditions for children; and year 7’s work on Anglo-Saxon England.

Next term we will be looking at the chronological development of those areas: Norman England, and the changing nature of society in industrial Britain at Key Stage 3, and superpower relations during the Cold War.

Уроки истории в средней и старшей школах можно приятно отметить: уровень вовлеченности и дисциплина во всех группах года позволили учащимся создать многообещающие работы; Мы начали размещать плакаты работ Year 8 на стенах класса.

Основные моменты на которые в последние недели будет сделан упор: работа по анализу источников, идущая в Year 11, где ученики изучают холодную войну; домашнее задание по индустриальной революции у Year 9, которые узнали об условиях, в которых жили дети на заводах; и работа Year 7 по англосаксонской Англии.

Mr. Alm (English and English Literature)

Upper secondary students are making steady progress in English Language and English Literature classes. The Year 13 English Language students have completed their linguistics unit on Language Change Over Time and have begun their study of Child Language Acquisition. We hope to soon observe primary classes to foster their theoretical understanding. In Year 11 and 12 English Literature, students will soon wrap up their poetry units. On 21 October we will tour the Anna Akhmatova Museum to learn more about her poetry and life.

Учащиеся старших классов средней школы неуклонно продвигаются вперед в занятиях по английскому языку и английской литературе. Учащиеся Year 13 на уроках по английскому языку завершили лингвистический блок по теме Изменение языка с течением времени и начали изучать, как усваивают язык дети. Мы надеемся в скором времени наблюдать за начальными классами, чтобы подкрепить изученную ими теорию их . Mr. Cárdenas  (Mathematics)

This week, Year 12 students continued to develop their ability to solve difficult problems involving arcs and sectors, while Year 13 students learned how to integrate exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Year 10 and Year 11 students wrote end-of-term tests.

Ms. Victoria (Computer Science and ICT)

This week, our lower secondary school students have successfully completed a large computer science section related to different types of information and their ability to be reproduced in binary code form. Children learned to convert numbers, text, sounds and even pictures into binary code and vice versa. Working in pairs, they exchanged messages in the form of a binary code and had a lot of fun.

Mr. Tsarev (Russian Biology)

Первые месяцы в курсах биологии практически во всех классах связаны с клетками и их изучением. И если в 5 классе изучение начинается со строения микроскопа и истории микроскопии, в 6 - со специфических растительных клеток (таких как корневые волоски, например), то в 7 классе ученики уже искали реальных представителей одноклеточных в почве, собранной у школы. Уверен, после этого урока они чаще станут мыть руки перед едой! 8 класс - это клетки и ткани человеческого организма, ну а 9, 10 и 11 классы - разделы общей биологии, где органоиды клетки к началу курса нужно уже помнить, чтобы глубже понять процессы, происходящие в них. На фото можно увидеть студента, успешно вспоминающего отличие аппарата Гольджи от Эндоплазматической сети.

The first months in biology in almost all classes are related to the study of cells. In the 5th grade the study begins with the structure of the microscope and the history of microscopy, while in the 6th grade it deals with specific plant cells (such as root hairs, for example), then in the 7th grade students were already looking for real monocellular inhabitants of the soil collected from the school. I am sure that after this lesson they will wash their hands more often before eating! Grade 8 studied the cells and tissues of the human body, and grades 9, 10 and 11 are studied general biology, where the organoids of the cell must already be remembered by the beginning of the course in order to better understand the processes occurring in them. In the photo you can see a student successfully recalling the difference between the Golgi apparatus and the Endoplasmic reticulum.
There are still many interesting discoveries ahead!

Ms. Daria (Russian Social Science and History)

The Term is coming to an end, which means it is time to test how our students have learned the material, what knowledge they have acquired, and what they have learned. To this end, tests were carried out in all classes today, some of which have already been checked: the results are pleasing. In the 7th grade, at the next lesson we begin to study the countries of the Ancient East. Students are looking forward to the beginning of the history of Ancient Egypt when they will be able to get acquainted with their religion. With the 8th grade, we finished the topic on the Empire of Charlemagne and are about to begin to study the topic "People of the North - the Normans. The Conquests of England." Students of the 9th grade at the last lesson on history got acquainted with the daily life of Europeans in the XVI - XVII centuries. The students were able to learn about the role of peasants, townspeople, aristocrats of that time, which allowed them to highlight the characteristics of each class: how they dressed, where they lived, what they ate, how they spent their leisure time. Further according to the plan, they will move on to study of the "European Renaissance", in which students will get acquainted with the culture of the High Renaissance, they are in for something very interesting! In the 10th grade at the last lesson on social studies, the topic "Development of society" was held, within the framework of the topic, such forms of development of society as evolution, revolution, reform were discussed and their features were highlighted. Students actively cited examples of revolutions and reforms from the history course.

Четверть подходит к концу, а значит наступило время проверить, как наши ученики усвоили материл, какие знания приобрели, чему научились. С этой целью во всех классах сегодня были проведены контрольные работы, некоторые из которых уже проверены: результаты радуют. В 7-Y классе на следующем занятии приступаем к изучению стран Древнего Востока. Ученики с нетерпением ждут, когда начнется история Древнего Египта, когда они смогут познакомиться с религией Древнего Египта. С 8-Y классом закончили тему, посвященную Империи Карла Великого, и вот-вот начнем изучать тему "Люди севера" - норманны. Завоевания Англии". Ученики 9-y на прошлом занятии по истории познакомились с повседневной жизнью европейцев в XVI–XVII вв. Ученики смогли побывать в роли крестьян, горожан, аристократов того времени, что позволило им выделить особенности каждого сословия: как одевались, где жили, чем питались, как проводили досуг. Дальше по плану изучение темы "Европейское возрождение", в рамках которой ученикам предстоит познакомиться с культурой Высокого Возрождения, их ждет что-то очень интересное! В 10-y на прошлом занятии по обществознанию прошли тему "Развитие общества", в рамках темы обсудили такие формы развития общества, как эволюция, революция, реформа и выделили их особенности. Ученики активно приводили примеры революций и реформ из курса истории.

The leaves are beginning to turn, and we’ve been having some blustery weather. Fall is here! 

School Spirit Days 

Right now, times are stressful, it’s beginning to get darker earlier, and the weather can be a bit gray and gloomy. So, to help lift our spirits and lighten the mood a bit, we are instituting School Spirit Days. School Spirit Days will usually happen on a Friday and will be announced ahead of time so students have time to plan. It’s a fun tradition, where students can dress according to a theme.  

Our first School Spirit Day will be this Friday, October 14. 

The theme is: Silly Hat / Hair Day 

This will be a uniform-optional day. Please encourage your child to find a silly hat to wear or to create a silly hairstyle. 

Excursions 

We are excited to see our first excursions getting underway. Year 1 and 2 and Early Years are putting together a combined field trip to the zoo.  

Books Online 

Unfortunately, we are currently blocked from the online reading resource, Raz Plus. We are reaching out to the company to see if we can do anything about this.  In the meantime, we have begun signing up our classes to Epic books online. Epic is an online resource that is free for use in schools. If families want to use it at home, you will need to pay for a subscription. More information can be found on the website: https://www.getepic.com/parents

Дни школьного духа  

Сейчас настали достаточно стрессовые времена - темнеет раньше, а погода может быть серой и мрачной. Поэтому, чтобы помочь поднять наш дух, а также повысить настроение, мы учреждаем Дни школьного духа. Дни школьного духа обычно будут проходить в пятницу и будут объявляться заранее, чтобы у учеников было время подготовиться. Это будет веселая традиция, когда ученики смогут одеваться в соответствии с темой.  

Наш первый День школьного духа будет в эту пятницу, 14 октября. 

Тема: Глупая шляпа / День волос 

В этот день необязательно носить школьную форму. Пожалуйста, помогите своему ребенку найти глупую шляпу или создать веселую прическу. 

Экскурсии 

Мы рады сообщить, что в нашей школе начинаются первые экскурсии. 1 и 2 классы и дети более младшего возраста поедут на экскурсию в Зоопарк.  

Книги онлайн 

К сожалению, в настоящее время мы заблокированы от онлайн-ресурса для чтения Raz Plus. Мы ведем диалог с компанией и стараемся узнать, можем ли мы что-то с этим сделать. Тем временем, мы начали записывать наши занятия в Epic books онлайн. Epic - это онлайн-ресурс, он бесплатный для использования в школах. Notes from Secondary 

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As we start the second week of October, we are in full-throttle with engaging learning and assessment. Last week some teachers started their monthly assessments, while some others will continue to apply them this week. The 29^th of October you will receive your child’s first report card of the year. As a rule, there should be no surprises regarding marks and achievement; to reach this goal teachers communicate their student’s success (homework completion, covered topics, marks) via EduPage. If you feel unsure on how your child is doing in any of his or her disciplines, please remember that EduPage should be your first reference source. If after checking EduPage you still need more information, please feel free to contact the teacher directly via this learning platform.

Communication

One of my priorities this year is to enhance communication between all the members of the school community. A critical tool to achieve this goal is EduPage. Please feel free to contact teachers directly via the platform should you have any questions regarding your child’s learning. I am also very happy to receive messages via EduPage from our parents and caregivers; please feel free to contact me with any suggestions, ideas or concerns regarding your child’s education at CIS. You can also sign up for private meetings with me via EduPage (Registration/Surveys -> Parent-teacher meetings); feel free to chose an available time slot.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

This year’s first Parent-Teacher Conference will take place on October 25 from 15:45 until 17:15. You can book a time slot with a particular teacher via EduPage using the abovementioned procedure (Registration/Surveys -> Parent-teacher meetings). Thank you very much to those parents who have already signed up. The event will take place at the Library on the second floor.

Goal-Setting

How difficult is it for one to achieve a given goal? How can one increase the probability of reaching that goal? Goal setting and perseverance are skills that, when developed during the school years, often provide a competitive advantage in a professional environment to graduates. The importance of goal-setting is one of the reasons why students at CIS SPb Secondary learn about the concept of S.M.A.R.T. goals in their Form Time and Guided Study sessions and how to apply them to increase their academic performance. During these lessons, students also learn about note-taking and develop other skills that will prove useful during their academic life. Please feel free to follow EduPage or contact your child’s Form Tutor to learn more about goal-setting in the classroom.  

Morning Drop-Off

Once again, I want say Thank You to our parent community for their understanding and collaboration during the implementation of the new rules for the morning drop-off. One can see how parents who know that they are going to take a bit longer to accompany their children to school are now parking on the designated areas, which allows for a safer morning. My most sincere thank you!

From the Classroom

Year 13 students learned about equity and distribution of income and wealth in Mr. Cafferkey’s Economics class while they explored corporate planning and implementation in Business Studies. In Mathematics, the pupils deepened their knowledge in differentiation through the differentiation of products and ratios of functions as well as of trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential functions. In Mr. Kori’s biology class students reviewed photosynthesis and cellular respiration in order to prepare for the test. Mr. Jenkin’s History class was also dedicated to exam practice with the aim of enhancing students’ results during the upcoming assessments.

During the Computer Science class, Year 12 students learned how to use the CASE function and loops in their coding, while Biology students discussed carbohydrates and lipids. Physics students used their previous knowledge of vectors from their IGCSE Extended Mathematics course to add coplanar forces while representing them in an orthonormal basis. In English Literature, the students analyzed Robert Browning’s “Epilogue.”

Year 11 pupils learned about rhythm and meter in poetry in Mr. Alm’s class, and can now successfully identify iambs, trochees, and dactyls. The students also worked hard to finalize their research question in their Global Perspectives class. In Mr. Jenkins’ History class, the students continued their study of the Cold War through source analysis of reactions and outcomes.

Russian Curriculum

Last week Year 7 pupils reviewed the noun and its gender, number, and case in their Russian Language class while reading Antoniy Pogorelsky “The Black Chicken or the Underground Inhabitants” with Mr. Ruslan. The students also learned how to calculate the Least Common Denominator (LCD) in Ms. Kristina’s class, definitely a skill that will also prove useful in their studies of the Cambridge curriculum.

Year 8 students continued their reading of “Dubrovski” in their Literature class while they learned more about the “Needs and capabilities of Humans Beings” in Social Science.

Year 9 learners explored the concept of mathematical models and half-planes in Ms. Irina’s Algebra and Geometry classes, while they were introduced to the basic of Economics in Ms. Daria’s Social Science class.

Ms. Kristina’s Year 10 physics students continued to learn more about basic thermodynamics and energy and then were introduced to the Geographical discoveries of the 20^th century.

Постановка целей

Насколько сложно достичь поставленной цели? Как можно увеличить вероятность достижения этой цели? Целеполагание и настойчивость – это навыки, которые при их развитии в школьные годы, очень часто обеспечивают выпускникам конкурентное преимущество в профессиональной среде. Важность постановки целей является одной из причин, по которой учащиеся средней и старшей школ CIS СПб узнают о концепции целей S.M.A.R.T. на классных часах (Form Time) и во время академической поддержки (Guided Study) и о том, как применять эти знания для повышения своей успеваемости. Во время этих уроков учащиеся узнают, как правильно конспектировать и кроме того, развивают другие полезные в академической жизни навыки. Пожалуйста, не забывайте проверять EduPage и писать классному руководителю, если пожелаете узнать больше о постановке целей в классе.  

Утренняя высадка учеников

Еще раз хочу сказать спасибо нашему родительскому сообществу за понимание и сотрудничество в период реализации новых правил утренней высадки учеников. Сейчас можно отметить, что родители, которые заранее предполагают, что им потребуется немного больше времени, чтобы проводить своих детей в школу, паркуются в специально отведенных местах, что позволяет сделать утро более безопасным. Из класса

Студенты Year 13 узнали о распределении доходов и богатства в классе Economics Мр. Кафферки, в то время как они изучали корпоративное планирование и реализацию в Business Studies. В математике учащиеся углубили свои знания в дифференцировании произведений соотношений функций, а также тригонометрических, логарифмических и экспоненциальных функций. В классе биологии Мр. Кори студенты рассмотрели фотосинтез и клеточное дыхание, чтобы подготовиться к тесту. Класс истории Мр. Дженкинса также был посвящен экзаменационной практике с целью повышения результатов учащихся во время предстоящих оценок.

Во время урока Computer Science учащиеся Year 12 научились использовать функцию CASE и петли в своих программах, в то время как ученики, изучающие биологию, обсуждали углеводы и липиды. Студенты-физики использовали свои предыдущие знания векторов из своего курса расширенной математики IGCSE, чтобы складывать копланарные силы, представляя их на ортонормированном базисе. На прошлой неделе ученики Year 7 изучали существительное и его род, число и падеж на уроке русского языка. Они также читали произведение «Черная курица или подземные жители» Антония Погорельского с Мр. Русланом. Учащиеся также научились вычислять наименьший общий знаменатель в классе Мс. Кристины. Определенно, этот навык также окажется полезным в их изучении кембриджской учебной программы.

Студенты Year 8 продолжили чтение «Дубровского» в своем классе литературы, в то время как они узнали больше о «Потребностях и возможностях человека» в уроках обществознания.

Учащиеся Year 9 изучали концепцию математических моделей и полуплоскостей на уроках алгебры и геометрии Мс. Ирины, в то время как они были ознакомлены с основами экономики в уроках по обществознанию Мс. Дарьи.

Студенты-физики Year 10 Ьс Кристины продолжали узнавать больше об основах термодинамики и энергии, а затем познакомились с географическими открытиями ХХ века.

Spanish Day

Friday morning, we celebrated Spanish Day with the whole school participating in a number of presentations for each other. Primary students performed songs and watched Secondary students recite Spanish-language poetry. Then they tried out their skills at buying food and teamed up with Secondary students for a whole-school quiz!

В пятницу утром мы отметили День испанского языка, и учащиеся всей школы показывали друг другу презентации. Ученики начальных классов исполняли песни и смотрели, как учащиеся средней школы читают стихи на испанском языке. Затем, они опробовали свои навыки в покупке продуктов питания и вместе с учениками постарше участвовали в викторине для всей школы!

Dear parents and caregivers,

This has been an exciting week full of events and good impressions. I was very happy to meet with some of our families this Thursday during our Secondary School Morning Coffee. It was invigorating to hear your comments and feedback over a cup of hot coffee and pastries. I am looking forward to seeing you again during our next session in October. It is also worth mentioning that today we celebrated our Spanish language day after having skipped last year’s celebration. Students, teachers, and community members were delighted to hear fellow Primary students performing in Spanish. A big kudos to key-stage three students for their performance of Pedro Calderón de La Barca’s monologue from La Vida Es Sueño. Need to buy groceries in a market in Central Madrid or Havana City? No problem! Our pupils showed us the words and phrases we need to buy the freshest of produce. Students also learned a little bit about famous people from the Spanish speaking world and their famous phrases and delighted their palates with Mexican tacos. A big thank you to all the teachers and students involved. What a wonderful way to end our first month of School!

Business Studies

What are the differences and similarities between a BMW 3 series and a Skoda Rapid? Year-11 students learned about the 4 P’s of marketing (product, price, place, and promotion) and explored their role through collaborative activities and plenary discussions in Mr. Cafferkey’s class.

Mathematics

What is the link between factoring expressions and expanding brackets? If you do not remember out of the top of your head, you could ask a Year-8 student as they explored this topic in Mr. Lyon’s class after, of course, a quick arithmetical warmup.

Science

Year-10 students continued their studies of Mechanics by exploring Newton’s Second Law, the relationship between a force applied to a mass and the acceleration that it undergoes due to that interaction in Mr. Kori’s class.

Russian Program

Pushkin and Fonvizin are this month’s guests in the Russian Literature class led by Mr. Ruslan. “You need to read not in order to object, not in order to unconditionally believe and agree, but in order to think, reason, and reflect.” A. S. Pushkin.

Уважаемые родители и опекуны!

Это была захватывающая неделя, полная событий и хороших впечатлений.  Я был очень рад встретиться с родителями, пришедшими в этот четверг на наше мероприятие - “Утренний кофе”.  Меня воодушевили ваши комментарии и отзывы за чашкой горячего кофе и выпечки. Я с нетерпением жду нашей следующей встречи с Вами в октябре. Стоит также отметить, что сегодня мы отметили день испанского языка. Учащиеся, преподаватели и другие члены нашего сообщества с удовольствием слушали, как ученики начальной школы выступали на испанском языке. Большое спасибо нашим ребятам из Key Stage 3 за прекрасное исполнение монолога Педро Кальдерона де Ла Барка из La Vida Es Sueño (Жизнь есть сон). Вы хотели бы купить продукты на рынке в центре Мадрида или Гаваны? Есть решение! Наши ученики подскажут слова и фразы, которые пригодятся, чтобы купить лучшие и свежие продукты. Учащиеся также узнали немного об известных людях из испаноязычного мира, а также об их знаменитых высказываниях, в то время как мы дегустировали мексиканские тако. Большое спасибо всем преподавателям и ученикам. Мы замечательно провели наш окончание первого месяца в школе!

Парковка и зона высадки

Хочу выразить свою самую искреннюю благодарность нашим родителям. Благодаря Вашему сотрудничеству на этой неделе с высадкой детей и парковкой в специально отведенных местах, мы сделали нашу школу еще более безопасной средой для детей. Без вашего участия это было бы невозможно. Спасибо!

Учащиеся из класса Year 10 продолжили изучение механики, исследуя второй закон Ньютона, связь между силой, приложенной к массе, и ускорением, которому она подвергается из-за этого взаимодействия. Все это проходило в классе мистера Кори.

Российская программа

Пушкин и Фонвизин – гости этого месяца на уроке русской литературы под руководством мистера Руслана. “Читать нужно не для того, чтобы возражать, не для того, чтобы безусловно верить и соглашаться, а для того, чтобы думать, мыслить, размышлять.” А. С. Пушкин.
