This is the last conference of the year. It is a great opportunity to understand more about how your child is doing in school and to look at the progress they’ve made over the course of the year.

A separate letter has gone out to parents, regarding planting. This is just a reminder. Students will be working in the dirt and soil. They should wear comfortable non-uniform clothing. If you wish, you may also send a change of clothes.

When: June 2, morning to lunch time 

Where: CIS campus playground / tennis courts / football pitch 

What: This is a sports event geared toward our smaller learners. It will consist of relay races and activity stations. 

This event is open to the public. CIS families are invited to attend, and if you know someone who might be interested in bringing their children, you are welcome to invite them. 

Sports Day for Upper Primary (Years 3-6) 

When: June 9, from 10:00 – 12:00 

Where: CIS campus, outside 

What: A scavenger hunt with clues, activities, and puzzle pieces. Students will participate on House Teams. 

Families are invited to attend!

Это открытое мероприятие: если у вас есть друзья с детьми, которые тоже хотели бы прийти - пожалуйста, приглашайте их.  

День спорта для Upper Primary (Year 3-6) 

Когда: 9 июня, с 10:00 до 12:00 

Где: рядом с кампусом CIS 

Что: поиск предметов (с подсказками, кусочками головоломки и выполнением действий). Ученики будут распределены по командам в соответствии с их Домом.

Cambridge Mile 2023 – Friday, May 26 

8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Meshchersky Park. 

This annual family festival dedicated to running, international friendship and community is organized by our school. The event includes not only 1 and 2-mile races, but various fun activities, a football tournament, family competitions, a show, and an open-air plov party! It's lots of fun, ask the ones who participated last year.

Last week was a short but active week. I was delighted to see so many families coming back from break on time, energized, and ready to end the year on a high note.
Прошедшая неделя выдалась короткой, но активной. Я c радостью наблюдал,  как много семей вернулись с каникул вовремя, полные энергии и готовые закончить год на высокой ноте.

Most of the IGCSE and A-Level exams are almost over, which is a reason for relief and celebration for many students. Now we swiftly enter the assessment period for Years 7 through 10. I wish our students luck in their efforts.

To celebrate Earh Day, our students will be planting a garden here at CIS. The flowers planted will be the same color as their houses. Students will bring the plants from home. Thank you for your support in celebrating this Day!

From the Classroom

Mr. Watkins (English)

As we wrap up term 4, classes have been completing projects and portfolio examinations. The year 11 and 12 English classes have finished their portfolio English papers and concluded some of the key concepts of the IGCSE and AS curriculum. The year 10 English class has looked at narrative writing while paying close attention to plot development and how this affects the experience of a reader. The year 9 Geography class started their project on the Middle East by choosing a certain location to perform research on. The year 10 Global Perspectives class finished their term project while paying close attention to collaboration and personal evaluations. This required a strong sense of awareness within research-based group work.

Mr. Sickles (Science)

The Year 10 team has been looking at the structure, uses of and tests for different biological molecules. The emphasis now is on enzyme activity, how they work and what factors affect their activity.  Year 11 has been working on revision for the upcoming exams, with the focus on the practical skills tested on Paper 6.  Both the AS and A Level Biology groups have been busy finishing up a few things with the final topics while also using previous exams to find weak areas to focus on in preparation for the exams coming after the holiday break.

Mr. Lyons (Mathematics, Science, Physics)

As we wrap up the term, each class has been working primarily on topic reviews and revision.

Year 7 have been looking back at some of the topics from the year and producing presentations to demonstrate their knowledge. They will continue to do this through the final term as we ensure no stone is left unturned. In mathematics, year 7 are ploughing through tables and charts as we look at the various ways to display and interpret data.

Year 8 have completed their statistics topic and used the final week for some diagnostics and assessment with some very pleasing results.

Year 9 were given a special assignment – to research and present how mathematics is important to a chosen occupation. The level of professionalism displayed throughout the presentations was surprisingly excellent!

Year 12 Physics has been all about practice, practice and more practice as we prepare for the AS Level exams in May. With all learning under the belt, we should see good results.

Mr. Claassen (Science)

The last month in science class has been a busy one! We have been learning about light, energy transfers in chemistry, and exam revision.

Year 8 – Light:

Light is a form of energy that travels in waves. It is all around us, and we use it to see the world around us. We learned about how light travels, how shadows are formed, how we see objects, how reflections form, how light bends at the boundary between air and glass or air and water, how white light spreads out into many colors, how two or more colors of light mix together, and how objects absorb and reflect colored light.

We also learned about the different types of light, including visible light, ultraviolet light, infrared light, and X-rays. We learned about how each type of light has a different wavelength, and how this affects how we see it.

Year 9 - Energy transfers in chemistry:

In chemistry, energy transfers are important in many different reactions. We learned about the different types of energy transfers, including exothermic and endothermic reactions. We also learned about the different ways that energy can be transferred, such as through heat, light, or electricity.

We also learned about the different types of chemical reactions, including combustion reactions, decomposition reactions, and combination reactions. We learned about how each type of reaction releases or absorbs energy.

Year 12 and 13 - Exam revision:

As we get closer to the end of the year, we are starting to focus on exam revision. We have been reviewing all of the material that we have learned this year, and we are starting to practice answering exam questions.

We are also learning about the different types of questions that can be asked on the exam, and how to answer them effectively. We are confident that we are well prepared for the exam, and we are excited to see what we can achieve!

We have learned a lot in the last month, and we are excited to continue learning more about science in the future.

Ms. Irina (Mathematics – Russian Program)

Последние дни перед каникулами связаны с аттестацией по российской программе, на этой неделе ребята аттестовались по геометрии. Но расслабляться некогда, впереди новые темы, новый уровень освоения, олимпиады и конкурсы. Ребята из yr12 добрались до логарифмов, которые оказались совсем несложными, а yr9 – до формул сокращённого умножения с квадратами, а ещё их ждут кубы. Так и движемся: от простого к сложному, от маленького к большому.

Mr. Bethell (English and Literature)

Greetings CIS community and hope you had a fruitful and relaxing break!  It feels like summer is here already but there is still much to do in our English classes!

Our year 7 group wrapped up their unit on Frankenstein just before the holiday and are now embarking on a new short story unit that will expose them to works of short fiction from all over the globe.  Their final Frankenstein task was to produce an “alternative” book cover complete with a book summary, review, and revised title.  Look what Uliana managed to produce!

The year 8 class are finishing the Greek mythology unit with a focus on Greek / Latin prefixes and roots.  Familiarity with these will prove incredibly useful for working out unfamiliar language in any linguistic context.

The year 9 group are continuing to experiment with different poetic forms – after practice with more restrictive forms such as haiku, limerick, and the sonnet (yes, our students each produced original sonnets!) we have now shifted to the more modern ‘free verse’ genre.  I look forward to seeing what they produce.

Year 10 have the immense but exciting challenge of starting William Shakespeare’s harrowing but masterful tragedy Othello this week.  This unit will include some exciting collaboration with the year 11 GCSE group who are also examining this powerful play.  Our students will be speaking Elizabethan English at home in no time!

Mr. Kenny (EAL)

A very warm welcome from EAL! So with a whirlwind end to the previous semester, we turn our newly-warmed (thank goodness) attentions to this one in a bid to close this academic year out with a flurry.

Year 7 have been making superb progress with their consistent use of past forms, so we have decided to start working on incorporating present perfect into our arsenals.

In year 8 we have sadly said our goodbyes to George, and we wish him the best of luck in his journey of learning Spanish! We have also welcomed Polina into our ranks, and have started her process by jumping into unreal conditionals.

As for year 9, we still have an incomplete roster thus far. We have, therefore, been running some creative projects for our earliest returnees, and will set more concrete academic goals upon the remainder’s return.

One of our year 12 students has set herself a stylish goal already- to produce an interview or review in the world of fashion! This will hopefully get published in Mr.Bethell and Mr.Lopez’ school publication; watch this space!

Overall, everyone is delighted to see each other again, and we’re all determined to end the year on a strong note.

Ms. Natalia (Russian Language and Literature – Russian program)

Учащиеся year 13 вышли на финишную прямую : ЕГЭ по русскому языку уже через две недели, поэтому сейчас они активно решают тестовые экзаменационные задания.

Старшеклассники year 12 на уроках литературы изучают творчество русского классика А.П.Чехова, драматурга и непревзойденного гения малого жанра.

Ребята из year11 также активно готовятся к прохождению итоговой аттестации по русскому языку за курс 9-летней средней школы. На экзамене им предстоит написать две небольшие работы и решить тест. Сейчас на уроках учащиеся оттачивают мастерство в написании аудиоизложения: надо записать текст по памяти после прослушивания.

Mr. Ruslan (Russian Language and Literature – Russian Program)

Ребята из Year 7 продолжают изучать правила орфографии раздела «Имя существительное». На уроках литературы мы продолжаем изучение зарубежной литературы.

В Year 8 мы продолжаем изучать наречие как часть речи. На уроках литературы написали сочинение по произведениям В. П. Астафьева и В. Г. Распутина. Прочитали произведение В. М. Шукшина «Критики».

В Year 9 мы закончили анализ произведения А. П. Платонова «В прекрасном и яростном мире». Начали изучение лирики Бориса Пастернака.

В Year 10 мы написали контрольный диктант по теме: «Обособленные определения» и приступили к разделу «Обособленные обстоятельства». На уроках литературы прочитали рассказ «Неудачница» и изучили лирику поэтов Русского Зарубежья.

Mr. Vladimir (Geography – Russian Program)

С ребятами из Year 7 мы окунулись в мир горных пород и минералов и выполнили практическую работу на тему: ‘’Минералы и горные породы”. Узнали, что такое горные породы и минералы, их виды и классификации. Ребята изучили коллекцию горных пород и узнали, какими свойствами они обладают и для чего применяются. Впереди, по программе, нас ждет изучение оболочек нашей планеты.

С ребятами из Year 8 мы изучили тему: “Почвы”, она интересна тем, что находится на стыке всех трех оболочек. На данный момент мы перешли к темам: “Природный комплекс” и “Природные зоны”. Ребятам важно узнать, в чем разница между природными зонами и от чего зависит процесс их формирования.

Year 9 на данный момент продолжают комплексное изучение материков. Мы уже изучили Австралию, Северную Америку, Антарктиду, Африку, Южную Америку, а на данный момент изучаем Евразию. Под комплексной работой я подразумеваю следующее: изучение истории развития материка, истории изучения материка, рельеф, полезные ископаемые, водные объекты, климат и многое-многое другое. Евразия — это завершающая тема по курсу географии 7 класса.

С Year 10 мы продолжаем изучение географических районов нашей страны. Изучили арктическую и центральную часть нашей страны, район Кавказа и Уральских гор. На данном этапе изучаем природу Западную Сибирь и Восточную Сибирь.

С ребятами из Year 11 мы продолжаем изучать экономико-географические районы РФ и прошли такие темы как: “Европейский Северо-Запад”, “Центральная Россия”, “Европейский Юг”, “Поволжье”, “Урал”, “Западную Сибирь” и “Восточную Сибирь”. На прошлом уроке начали проходить тему: “Дальний Восток”. В рамках этих тем мы изучаем ресурсы, экономику и основные достопримечательности регионов России.

С ребятами из Year 12 мы изучаем такие темы как: “Международные экономические отношения” и “Глобальные проблемы и стратегию устойчивого развития”, в рамках тем мы изучаем международные организации и страны, которые в них входят, а также глобальные проблемы современности и пути их решения.

С Year 13 мы успешно закончили изучать экономики таких материков, как Ю. Америка и Африка, Австралия, отдельных стран Евразии, стран Океании, также близко познакомились с географическим положением, населением, структурой экономики и даже историей этих материков и стран. На данный момент мы перешли к изучению нашей страны и ее положения в мировой экономике.

I want to begin by thanking you for your active involvement in the Art Auction. Thanks to the CIS community, we raised 300.000 rubles, out of which 10% will go the artist and 90% to the 3,14 Charity Fund, who help children in urgent medical need.

We continue our second week of Cambridge examinations for Years 11, 12, and 13. I want to remind you that exams will not be rescheduled, so please make sure that your child does not miss school.

Finally, I am looking forward to a great CIS Got Talent tomorrow. See you there.

From the Classroom

Mr. Carlos (Spanish)

The last week, the students have been reviewing the content for the end-of-term tests. Y7 have been practicing how to talk about their physical appearance and the environment in which they live, using the verbs "to have", the grammatical concordance between nouns and adjectives, etc.

Y8 has reviewed the vocabulary about plans for the weekend, clothes and preparations, practicing gender and number concordance, and contrasting tenses (present, past, future).

Y9 has practiced the contents related to human rights, the use of the verb “to be able” and the comparative forms. They have been talking about journeys to school, environmental issues or raising money for charity.

Y10 has been practicing the comparative and superlative forms in relation to family and friends.

Y11 and Y12 have been practicing for the IGCSE and AS level tests.

Finally, we have had the corresponding end-of-term tests.

Mr. Kennedy (Business, Geography, Global Perspectives)

Greetings! Exams are underway and students are performing well. A kind reminder that students should be getting enough sleep as recall becomes challenging without it.

The vending machine has arrived! It will be operational from next week. Remember, there is a 50/50 profit split between a charity and the students from this machine. We will start a business club which will be open to all secondary students from term 5. This club will be responsible for running the vending machine business, and all other business activities that students are involved in.

Hello all: nearly there!

It’s been a tough, but productive year, and the year 11s, 12s, and 13s can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Portfolio work has been underway for some weeks, and this is the culmination of all their efforts; I’m confident that all my hardworking students’ work will pay off, and they’ll reap the reward for their efforts.

The year 10s are likewise showing great promise: they’ve been practicing answering GCSE paper questions, and are looking to move on to a fascinating new topic.

KS3 – years 7-9 – are producing wonderful, creative work, and the year 7s are enjoying learning about the Black Death.

Mr. Cardenas (Mathematics)

These last weeks Year 10 have been developing their skills in Geometry, working with inscribed angles and shapes in circles. Years 11, 12, and 13 are preparing for their exams. This is the last sprint! Good luck!

Ms. Victoria (ICT and Computer Science)

For the last two weeks, secondary school students have been coding to solve mathematical problems where it is necessary to apply several formulas and solutions. Also they have been learning what bugs (mistakes) programmers usually make and learn to debug (look for errors) their own code.

В течение последних двух недель учащиеся средней школы создают программы для решения математических задач, где необходимо применить несколько формул и решений. Также они изучают, какие "баги" (ошибки) обычно делают программисты и учатся отлаживать свой собственный код (искать в программе ошибки) .

Mr. Aleksandr (Russian Program)

Аттестация для школ-партнёров в самом разгаре: и онлайн тесты для старшей школы, и бумажные контрольные работы для младшей и средней школы. Необходимо отчитаться по каждому предмету, чем учителя и ученики активно занимаются с начала апреля. Последний день аттестации - 28 апреля для начальной школы и 29 апреля для средней и старшей школы.

Важно помнить, что в субботу, 29 апреля, занятия будут проходить по обычному расписанию, к тому же наш повар, мистер Александр Наумов, подготовит сюрприз для всех учеников, пришедших на занятия в этот день.

Прошедшая неделя позволила многим ученикам на практике применить свои знания по биологии: от решения генетических задач и поиска на территории школы растений, принадлежащих к разным отделам, до проверки работы вестибулярного аппарата при помощи различных практических тестов.

Dear parents, thank you very much for the support of the Art Auction, for the interest in each work of young artists, for the fact that each work has found its home. Knowing that your creativity is needed and liked is probably one of the main facts for a successful move forward.

In class, we study the history of mosaics and create our own. We got acquainted with the mosaics of ancient Greece, Rome and Byzantium.

Last week was a celebration of books and readers with guest readers from Secondary, a book fair, 2 competitions, and a book character costume parade. Below are the results from the competitions. 

Bookface Competition 

Students in Primary and Secondary voted for the top five entries. We had one two-person entry and a few tied places.

Book Week – Guest Readers 

This week, teachers from Secondary will come to Primary classes to read to students and talk about the books they love.  

Book Week Costume Parade – April 20 

Students and teachers will dress up as characters from books. We will have a celebration and parade of characters in the Assembly Hall during our Lesson 5, 12:50 – 13:30. 

Parents are welcome to attend and celebrate with us. 

Book Fair – April 18, 19, 20 

We’ve added an extra day! 

What: A book seller will come to the school to sell books. 

Where: They will be set up in the main Reception Area. 

What time: 10:00 – 17:00 

Each class will have scheduled time slots to visit the Book Fair. If a student forgets money, they can put a book on hold and pay for it later (but please, only if they are 100% sure they will get it). Parents are also welcome to browse and buy books. 

Next Year 

We are happy to announce that as of the next academic year, CIS St. Petersburg is opening a new program option. This program is targeted toward students, who have studied mainly in Russian schools and would like to join our school in a less intensive international program while still being part of an international environment.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

These weeks ahead are, perhaps, the most intense weeks of the year for some of our students. The exams have started, the Book Fair is on (don't forget to buy your books!), the Art Auction is happening this Wednesday with CIS Got Talent happening next week. Please make sure that your child gets enough sleep and is ready for the exams, particularly if your child is in Year 11, 12, or 13. These next weeks are decisive! As I stated earlier, If a student misses an examination, they miss one third of their grade and it will be impossible to earn the maximum grade. I urge you to not underestimate the importance of not coming to school to write the exams. There will be no exam rescheduling.

I am proud to share with you a great piece of news. Due to an increased interest in our school, we are opening new groups based on the Russian academic program, which will allow new students to adapt to our international environment even faster.

To conclude, I want to invite you once again to our Charity Art Auction this coming Wednesday. We will enjoy an interesting and engaging evening, and most importantly, we will help children in need. I am looking forward to seeing you there.

Предстоящие недели станут, пожалуй, самыми напряженными неделями в году для некоторых наших учеников. Экзамены уже начались, книжная ярмарка идет своим ходом, в эту среду состоится арт-аукцион, а на следующей неделе — «CIS Got Talent».

Пожалуйста, убедитесь, что ваш ребенок хорошо высыпается и готов к экзаменам, особенно если он учится в Year 11, 12 или 13. Следующие недели являются решающими! Как я упоминал ранее, в случае пропуска экзамена учащийся потеряет одну треть своей оценки, и будет уже невозможно получить максимальный балл. Я призываю вас не недооценивать пропуск школы в дни экзаменов. Переноса экзаменов не будет.

Я также рад поделиться с Вами отличной новостью. В связи с большим интересом к нашей школе в новом учебном году мы открываем классы на основе российской программы, позволяющие новым ученикам еще быстрее влиться в нашу международную среду.

Mr. Cafferkey (Business and Economics)

Your children at CIS St Petersburg are raising money using their skills as artists. It is only right that this money is used to help needy children in our city.

The majority of funds raised on the night will be dedicated to support the 3,14 St Petersburg charity which provides both care and financial support to children suffering from various forms of Cancer.

Help support this wonderful charity by attending our ART AUCTION on WEDNESDAY EVENING AT 17:00 until 19:30, 19TH APRIL. The AUCTION will commence at 18:00.

Ms. Nadezhda (Music)

Our students keep practicing for CIS got talent – this coming Monday and Tuesday (17-18 of April) are the two last days to audition. Rehearsals continue with great enthusiasm and the show promises to be an impressive and bright display of creativity and ability!

We are looking forward to seeing all these young talented students on the stage on April 26^th.

Several of our year groups have taken and completed their controlled assessments in music for the Russian program and the results have been very pleasing! Well done to all our budding musicians.

Ms. Nina (Art)

Senior students are working hard on the exam. Year 12 master watercolour techniques.

Mr. Bethell (English and Literature)

Spring is here at last, and brings with it many exciting new topics for investigation in our English literature classes.

Our year 7 group have done phenomenal work with the novel Frankenstein.  They are becoming much more adept at writing analytical paragraphs, and have grappled with some really mature philosophical questions.  Mary Shelley’s novel requires us to think seriously about the responsibility that comes with creating life, and with AI becoming increasingly sophisticated, Frankenstein remains very relevant today.

The year 8 class are becoming more and more proficient in the world of Greek mythology.  Last week they completed posters about 10 different Gods and then created quizzes based on their own research.  This week they’ll be rewriting the myth “Daedalus and Icarus” in a modern context!

Our year 9s have begun an ambitious poetry unit that began with a haiku presentation and is now attempting to convert a long section of prose into free verse poems.  In the upcoming weeks we’ll be composing and analysing more poems and hopefully sparking a love of poetry in all our wonderful students!

Finally, the year 10 group are finishing up our unit on poetry with a challenging final essay task, as well as a timed-writing and extensive test on poetic terms.  I have full confidence that they will rise to the challenge, and can’t wait to begin the next unit – drama with the greatest English playwright, William Shakespeare!

Mr. Kenny (EAL)

So this term has seen us as hard at work as ever on our academic goals. Year 7 have been strongly prioritising vocabulary, the primary focus being on helping our 2 wonderful new students settle in; Dong Wook and Valeria- welcome!

Years 8 and 9 have been working, unbeknownst to each other, on parallel goals; namely improving their marks in Chemistry and going deeper into the different functions of modal verbs. Despite the difficulties encountered when approaching science in a foreign language, there is still much that can be achieved through hard work and persistence. To both years I say well done and keep up the positivity.

Finally, year 12 have chosen to focus solely on their profile subjects for AS level. This has meant studying very specific material and creating mind maps for various chapters. These exams are taking off this week, so the best of luck to all candidates!

Ms. Marina (Physical Education)

For the last couple weeks all secondary students have completed the first part of physical tests (push-ups, sit ups, long jump and shuttle run) to see their improvement through the year.

As the weather gets warmer, we are starting to go outside for PE lessons. Our next topic of the curriculum is football(soccer). All secondary students will be involved in the game depending on their abilities and skills.

Mr. Lyons (Science and Mathematics)

Now we are finally parting ways with winter, it seems lower secondary mathematics students are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, as everyone has appeared to put in even more effort over the last few weeks.

Year 7 have mastered the various forms of transformation – translation, reflection, rotation and enlargement – and are now tackling area, surface area and volume of shapes.

Year 8, having recently completed area and volume work, are now chin-deep in data as they get to grips with different methods of representing and interpreting data, recognising the difference between discrete and continuous data and drawing different diagrams such as bar and pie charts.

Due to the extreme efforts put in by the class, year 9 have almost completed the entire program of work for the year, which has given us the opportunity to push on towards some year 10 topics. Most recently, the class has worked exceptionally well with quadratics, investigating the different methods for solving them.

In year 7 science there is a similar story, as we have almost completed the syllabus meaning we can now consolidate our knowledge, fill in any gaps that might exist and even perform some more advanced and interesting practicals during our lab time.

Year 12 physics is in good shape for the upcoming AS Level exams in May, as we too approach the final topic of the year. The last few weeks have been all about waves and their properties, giving rise to several cool experiment opportunities and a couple of false fire alarms due to the ‘siren-like’ sounds coming from the lab!

Mr. Sickles (Science)

The Year 10 scientists have been focusing on the structures and functions of biological molecules.  They conducted several tests to see if particular foods contained lipids, proteins and carbohydrates (sugars).  Currently, the focus is on enzymes and what factors affect their effectiveness.  In Year 11, the unit over waves was concluded.  The latest topics being explored are atomic physics (including radioactive decay), sex cells and chromosomes, hydrocarbons and electromagnetism in motors.  The Year 12 biologists have been focusing on immunity (looking at our primary and secondary responses) and starting the revision for the upcoming exams.  The Year 13 biologist has been finishing up the genetic technologies topic (including PCR and microarrays) while also beginning the final exam revision process.

Mr. Ruslan (Russian Language and Literature – Russian Program)

Вместе с Year 7 продолжаем изучение морфологических признаков глагола. На уроках литературы изучаем творчество поэтов о Великой Отечественной войне, попутно готовясь к итоговой аттестации.
Year 8 тоже готовятся к итоговой аттестации по русскому языку и литературе. Помимо этого, ими был изучен раздел по изучению морфологии глагола. А на уроках литературы мы изучаем произведение уже знакомого ребятам с пятого класса Виктора Петровича Астафьева «Конь с розовой гривой».

Year 9 познакомились с творчеством неизвестного им поэта – футуриста Владимира Владимировича Маяковского.

Вместе с Year 10 разбирали типовые задания по типу ВПР в целях подготовки к аттестации, написали изложение с элементами сочинения. А на уроках литературы познакомились с сатирой Тэффи и Михаила Зощенко.

Mr. Vladimir (Geography – Russian Program)

С учениками из Year 7 мы продолжаем путешествовать по Миру и изучать материки. За это время мы уже изучили такие материки, как Евразию и Африку, Южную и Северную Америку. На данный момент мы изучаем самый загадочный материк нашей планеты-Антарктиду. Впереди по программе, нас ждет изучение Австралии.

С ребятами из Year 8 мы изучили интереснейшую тему: “Биосфера”, а интересна она тем, что это оболочка планеты, которая находится на стыке всех трех оболочек, а самое главное, что в этой оболочке сконцентрирована жизнь. На данный момент мы перешли к теме “Почва”. Ребятам важно было узнать, чем почва отличается от грунта, и какие виды почв есть на нашей планете, а также какую значимость они несут для человечества. Впереди нас ждет изучение основных процессов, которые происходят в географической оболочке.

Year 9 на данный момент проходят комплексное изучение материков. Мы уже изучили Австралию, Северную Америку, Антарктиду, Африку, и сейчас продолжаем нашу работу, но уже изучая Южную Америку. Под комплексной работой я подразумеваю следующее: изучение истории развития материка, истории изучения материка, рельеф, полезные ископаемые, водные объекты, климат и многое-многое другое.

С Year 10 мы закончили изучение очень важного и серьезный блока про природные зоны России. На данном этапе нашего обучения мы перешли к изучению географических районов нашей страны. Изучили арктическую и центральную часть нашей страны, на данном этапе изучаем природу Кавказа и Уральских гор. 

С ребятами из Year 11 мы продолжаем изучать экономико-географические районы РФ и прошли такие темы как: “Европейский Северо-Запад”, “Центральная Россия”, “Европейский Юг”, “Поволжье” и начинаем проходить тему: “Урал”. В рамках этих тем мы изучаем ресурсы, экономику и основные достопримечательности регионов России.

С ребятами из Year 12 мы изучаем отрасли мировой промышленности: машиностроение, химическая промышленность, металлургия, а также узнали, какие страны обладают большим количеством этих производств.

С Year 13 мы успешно закончили изучать экономики таких материков, как Ю. Америка и Африка, Австралия, отдельных стран Евразии, также близко познакомились с географическим положением, населением, структурой экономики и даже историей этих материков и стран. На данный момент изучаем страны Океании.
 

Mr. Kristina (Mathematics – Russian Program)

На этой неделе дети из y8 осваивали методы составления и анализа диаграмм. Учились собирать информацию и представлять ее в виде графиков. Со студентами из y11 продолжаем активную подготовку к экзамену. Оттачиваем первую часть экзамена и более подробно разбираем 2 часть. Обсуждаем более простые способы решения, а также обращаем внимание на оформление, ведь 2-ую часть будет проверять эксперт. А вот y10 заканчивает тему квадратных уравнений, кроме стандартных способов решения с дискриминантом и теоремой Виета, прошли метод перестановки и китайский способ решения. Каждый студент выбрал тот метод, который ему больше понравился. Наши юные любители математики y7 осваивают пространственную геометрию и учатся искать объем самых необычных фигур.

Mr. Lomov (History – Russian Programme)

На этой и прошлой неделе ребята писали аттестационные работы по истории и обществознанию. Конечно, было волнительно, но тут самое время вспомнить поговорку: "у страха глаза велики".

Действительно, остаточные знания учащихся - это всегда "сюрприз". Как для учителя, так и для самих ребят. И поэтому очень приятно, когда слышишь во время тестирования: "О, это я знаю!", "Я помню, мы говорили об этом"!

Хочется сказать, что предварительные результаты аттестации по обществознанию известны уже сейчас, их можно посмотреть в эдупейдж. А результаты по истории ребята узнают в следующую субботу.

From the Classroom

Mr. Watkins (English, Geography, Global Perspectives)

April is off to a busy start! The year 11 and 12 English classes have been concluding the most important concepts and areas of study for their portfolio submissions. Therefore, students have been working on directed writing, extended writing themes, comprehension skills, and analysis within implicit texts.

The year 10 English class has been focusing on the use of meaning and effect within two chosen texts. Students looked at an old IGCSE exam extract as well as a self-chosen text.

The year 9 geography class wrapped up their unit on glaciers with a term project and commenced their unit on the Middle East.

The year 10 Global Perspectives class commenced their second team project for the year. This will ensure that all new students can experience the collaboration skills that the GP syllabus requires and encourages.

Ms. Liuba (Russian as Additional Language)

Year 7 started a new topic this week. They are getting acquainted with places in town and will soon be able to talk about St. Petersburg and other cities of Russia and the world.

Year 8 students dedicated this week to working with plural forms of nouns. The inflection of Russian nouns in plural can often be difficult and tricky, but Yakov B. proved that he could do it very well.

Mr. Claassen (Science)

As we wrap up the last two weeks, it's interesting to hear about the work completed by different classes. Year 8 students have been busy learning about chemical reactions, specifically how to work out the name of a compound from the elements in it and how to write word equations to describe chemical reactions. They've also been learning about how different salts can be made by reactions with acids, as well as the compounds formed when metals and non-metals react with oxygen. In terms of skills, they have been focusing on identifying correlations in results and asking scientific questions that can be tested by carrying out investigations and collecting evidence.

Moving onto Year 9, the focus has been on energy transfers in chemistry. Students have been learning about the energy transfers that take place during chemical reactions, including the terms exothermic and endothermic. They've also had the opportunity to explore examples of exothermic and endothermic processes. As for skills, they have been working on planning investigations based on previous knowledge, drawing conclusions, and explaining findings using scientific ideas. They've also been evaluating methods and suggesting improvements.

For the Year 12 and 13 students, the last two weeks have been all about external exam revision. While it may not be as exciting as learning new material, it's an essential part of the exam preparation process. These students have been using their time to review and consolidate their understanding of the material they've covered over the year. They've also been practicing exam-style questions to help them prepare for the real thing.

It's great to see the variety of work that different classes have been doing over the last two weeks. Year 8 students have been building a strong foundation in chemical reactions, which will undoubtedly serve them well in the years to come. Meanwhile, Year 9 students have been developing important scientific skills that will help them excel in their studies. And of course, the Year 12 and 13 students are putting in the hard work necessary to succeed in their exams.

Overall, it's been a productive couple of weeks, with each class working towards their specific goals. As the school term continues, it will be interesting to see how each of these classes progresses and what new material they'll be tackling. But for now, we can all take a moment to appreciate the hard work that has gone into these last two weeks and look forward to what's to come.

It looks like Spring is finally here (knock on wood)! I hope everyone had a lovely, sunny weekend. As you can see from the dates above, the next two weeks are busy with Cosmonaut’s Day, Book Week preparation and celebration, and our Art Auction.  

Cosmonaut’s Day Contests 

We are running 2 contests for Cosmonaut’s Day. 

1. Each student will create a drawing, painting, or poster with a space theme. Students from a neighboring class will have a chance to vote on their favorite. 

1. Each class will recreate a space-themed fiction or nonfiction photo. 

Book Week – Book Face Challenge 

This is our second photo challenge for book week. There are lots of ways to get creative and have fun with this! 

Book Fair – April 18 and 19 

What: A book seller will come to the school to sell books. 

Where: They will be set up in the main Reception Area. 

What time: 10:00 – 17:00 

Each class will have scheduled time slots to visit the Book Fair on both days. If a student forgets money, they can put a book on hold and pay for it later (but please, only if they are 100% sure they will get it). Parents are also welcome to browse and buy books. 

Book Week Costume Parade – April 20 

Students and teachers will dress up as characters from books. We will have a celebration and parade of characters in the Assembly Hall during our Lesson 5, 12:50 – 13:30. 

Parents are welcome to attend and celebrate with us.

Похоже, наконец-то пришла весна (постучим по дереву)! Я надеюсь, что ваши выходные были прекрасными и солнечными. Как вы можете видеть, следующие две недели посвящены Дню космонавтики, подготовке и празднованию Книжной недели и нашему художественному аукциону.  

Конкурсы ко Дню космонавтики 

Мы проводим 2 конкурса ко Дню космонавтики. 

1. Каждый ученик создаст рисунок, картину или плакат с космической тематикой. Ученики из соседних классов смогут проголосовать за своего фаворита. 

1. Каждый класс воссоздаст художественную или документальную фотографию на космическую тематику. 

Книжная неделя – конкурс «Лицо с обложки» 

Это наш второй фотоконкурс для книжной недели. Это хорошая возможность проявить творческий подход и повеселиться! 

Книжная ярмарка – 18 и 19 апреля 

Что: Для продажи книг в школу придет продавец. 

Где: Книги будут расположены в главной зоне ресепшн. 

Когда : 10:00 – 17:00 

Для каждого класса будут запланированы временные интервалы для посещения книжной ярмарки. Если ученик забудет деньги, он сможет отложить книгу (но, пожалуйста, только если он на 100% уверен, что хочет ее купить) и заплатить за нее позже. Родители также могут ознакомиться с ассортиментом и приобрести книги. 

Костюмированный парад Книжной недели – 20 апреля 

Ученики и преподаватели облачатся в костюмы персонажей книг. Праздник и парад персонажей пройдет в Актовом зале во время нашего пятого урока, в 12:50 – 13:30. 

Приглашаем родителей праздновать с нами.

Your children at CIS St Petersburg are raising money using their skills as artists. It is only right that this money is used to help needy children in our city.

Some of the funds raised will be used to support some of the 14 official orphanages in St Petersburg.

However, the majority of funds raised on the night will be dedicated to support a particular St Petersburg charity which provides both care and financial support to children suffering from various forms of Cancer.

Over the last 9 years have provided URGENT TARGETED ASSISTANCE to 101 sick children. The   charity is part of the GOOD FAIRIES’ CHARITABLE FOUNDATION.

Mr. Carlos (Spanish)

Hello everyone! Y7 Spanish students have spent a week getting to know each other better: they are now able to describe themselves and others, both physically and psychologically. They can also describe what their houses are like. We have also talked about some celebrations such as the carnival in Spain, and they have learned that we Spaniards really like to party.

In Y8 we have talked about clothes and accessories, and have learned to describe how we are dressed, using the concordance between nouns and adjectives. We have also talked about sport events such as football, as well as a particular type of party: the costume party.

Y9 students have learned new vocabulary and expressions in Spanish to talk about ethical aspects related to the world we live in: the need to recycle, not to consume more energy than it should, to help others. They have also worked with future solidarity plans, and have seen how young people from underdeveloped countries live.

In Y10 we have talked about subjects and teachers, as well as sports and other leisure activities.

The Y11 group have been trying to unravel the mysteries of Spanish past tenses and their contrast. They have also talked about traffic accidents and health problems and have looked for solutions to them.

Mr. Kennedy (Geography, GP, Business Studies)

The end of the academic year is fast approaching. The Y12 Business Studies students are concluding the final sections of their syllabus and have begun working on the portfolio assignment.

The new Y10 geography students completed a test of the work that they had missed at the beginning of the year. The original Y10 students gave a wonderful presentation on the UN development goals and the indicators used to measure development.

Most classes are completing sections that will be tested in the coming weeks. Good luck to those students!

As spring approaches - eventually, we will be resuming free football sessions on Tuesdays at 15:40. All students are welcome to attend!

Most students participate in volleyball, table tennis and other sports during the breaks. A wonderful atmosphere is present amongst peers.

Mr. Jenkins (History)

Exciting, and tense, times at present: end-of-year exams are at hand for the years 11s to 13s.

We’ve spent the month fastidiously and frantically preparing ourselves for the challenge, and the hard work should soon pay off.

The year 7s-9s have also been hard at work: the 7s and 8s have produced some impressive posters and guides to the content they’ve been studying, whereas the year 9s are looking to produce more demanding writing, in preparation for beginning year 10, and a deeper level of study

Mr. Alm (English, Literature)

On Tuesday and Wednesday, eight CIS Upper Secondary students participated in the 27^th Annual Saint Petersburg International Model United Nations conference. During the event, each student assumed the role of a diplomat, representing either India, Iran, or Finland. They debated issues related to creating a safe internet for children, reducing air pollution in cities, and encouraging volunteering at the local and global levels. They worked with delegates from other schools to craft and pass resolutions to solve the previously mentioned issues.

The students were active in collaborating to create the resolutions. At the end of the conference, Antoni Slubowski (Year 13) received the Best Delegate award for his work representing Iran on the Environmental Committee. Gabriel Hildebrand (Year 13) and Mariia Marakasova (Year 10) received Special Recognition awards for their contributions representing Iran on the ECOSOC (Economic and Social Committee) and representing India on the Environmental Committee.

Mr. Cárdenas (Mathematics)

This past week, our Year 12 students finished covering their AS-Level curriculum. They are now dissecting past papers and practicing for their exams. Year 13 are finishing the last Statistics topics regarding expectation and variance of linear combinations of distributions. Year 11 is also near the finish line, covering inequailities and linear programming to solve optimization problems. We will soon start doing past papers to practice for the exams.

Ms. Victoria (ICT and Computer Science)

This term, Secondary school students hone their skills in working with algorithm tools. This week Year 7 students learn how to create flowcharts to solve simple problems where they need to have several options. Also, students of Year 8 and Year 9 are taught the basics of programming in text-based programming languages such as JavaScript and Java.

В этой четверти учащиеся средней школы оттачивают навыки работы с алгоритмами. На этой неделе учащиеся 7 класса учились создавать блок-схемы для решения простых задач, в которых необходимо иметь несколько вариантов ответа. Кроме того, учащихся 8 и 9 классов изучали основы программирования на текстовых языках программирования, таких как JavaScript и Java.

Mr. Aleksandr (Biology – Russian Program)

С началом Апреля начинается процесс аттестации в школах-партнёрах. Нам уже прислали несколько работ, некоторые работы проводятся в присутствии учителей из школы-партнёра. Пожалуйста, удостоверьтесь, что ваш ребенок не пропускает уроки без уважительных причин. В эту субботу, 1 апреля, были написаны работы по биологии в years 7–10. Результаты вы вскоре увидите в EduPage.

Продолжается проект “питомец в стакане”. К выращиванию авокадо в стакане все уже привыкли, поэтому в этом году выбрали. Необычный объект.

Неделю назад ребята из year8 дали ему имя - Гриша. В субботу ему стало тесно в предыдущем стакане - найдём ему новый дом.

We will have a photographer on campus from 9:00-14:00.

Please make sure your children have appropriate uniform wear for photos.

Dark blue or black trousers, a white shirt, red sweater or jumper, and black shoes.

This past week has been an active one in almost every aspect of school life. Last Tuesday we had the Semifinals of our House Trivia League, organized by our students and teachers. Our school community is getting ready to celebrate our first annual Art Auction this coming April 19, followed by our traditional CIS Got Talent concert on April 26. It is with great pride that I share with you that these events are organized to a large degree by our dedicated students, in alignment with our efforts to increase our student involvement. Field trips / Экскурсии

Our students visited ITMO University where they learned about electricity, science, and technology. Next week, our A-Level Art students will visit the Hermitage to learn about Flemish and Dutch painting.

Strategic Planning and CIS Quality Control / Стратегическое планирование и контроль качества СIS

Last week I had the opportunity to visit our sister Campus Gorki in the Moscow Region, where I took part in the annual academic audit of the campus. This practice allows us as teachers and school leaders to make sure that best practices are in place to maximize student engagement and achievement. We also expect a visit from our Moscow and Toshkent colleagues sometime during the year. This will be an opportunity to highlight the splendid work we have done as a community (students, parents, teachers, staff) in making our school a better place for our children. During the second day, we as part of the CIS Group leadership, took part in a Strategic Session Retreat, where we further developed not only our beliefs, principles, and strategy, but also our commitment to our profession and our community.

На прошлой неделе я посетил Кампус CIS Горки в Московской области, где принял участие в ежегодном академическом аудите кампуса. Он позволяет учителям и руководству школы убедиться, что применяются лучшие практики для максимального вовлечения и успеваемости учащихся. В этом году мы также ожидаем визита наших московских и ташкентских коллег. Для нас это станет возможностью продемонстрировать большую работу, которую мы проделали как сообщество (студенты, родители, учителя, сотрудники), чтобы сделать школу лучшим местом для наших детей. На следующий день руководство нашего кампуса, являясь частью управленческой команды CIS Group, приняли участие в Стратегической Сессии, где мы продолжили развивать не только наши убеждения, принципы и стратегию, но и приверженность профессии и сообществу.

Finally, I want to inform you that this Thursday March 30, a professional photographer will take a picture of our students to be used in the School Yearbook. The yearbook is an important project that is being designed by our students for the first time at CIS. This is a remarkable success and endeavor. I personally ask for your support in making sure that your child comes with full uniform that day (or strict school colors without any pictures.) Your help is of immense value in making sure that your child looks great in the yearbook.

Ms. Nina (Art)

The high school students finished their work for the auction and continued to study the elements of art. This week we got acquainted with the variety of white colors and painted a white still life. And created patterns.

Mr. Bethell (English Language and Literature)

Hi CIS Team, it’s great to be back with another update on life in the literature classroom.

Year 7 is delighted to welcome two new students to our group, Valeria and Dong Wook.  We’ve also begun a new unit centered around Mary Shelley’s seminal novel, Frankenstein.  This novel will push students to consider what it means to be human, which is double relevant now, with the emergence of artificial intelligence.

Our year 8 group delivered an outstanding performance of various scenes from George’s Marvellous Medicine.  Once again, a huge thanks to EAL master Mr. Tom Kenny for his support in coordinating this cross-curricular task.  They have now embarked on a new myths and legends unit which promises to be challenging and exciting.

Year 9 have at last completed their reading of Martyn Pig and are now preparing to write their first academic-length essay of the year on its various themes.  They’ve worked hard this unit and I’m frequently in awe of their spirited discussions around questions of morality, justice, and culpability.

Finally, the talented year 10 group have now completed their close reading analyses of various IGCSE poems that span several centuries of English-language poetry.  We are now in the process of training for a full-length essay based on a past exam paper.

Spring is nearly upon us, and our students’ brains are steadily sharpening with the weather!

Mr. Kenny (English as and Additional Language)

In EAL, most classes have been working hard towards achieving their academic goals. In year 8, this has encompassed support in the fields of geography and science, though at times even involves preparation for EFL tests. Also, an exciting new project to dramatise scenes from their literature book is in the works; watch this space!

Year 9 chose more to focus on science this term, the key topic being chemistry. Associated English to support the themes of making salts, displacement, and general knowledge of the periodic table has been covered. In addition, the 3^rd conditional of English grammar has been a major theme for us. Z

As always, the overarching focus is to encourage fruitful and enthusiastic communication wherever possible. With this in mind, I’ve been happy with our efforts so far.

Mr. Sickles (Science and Biology) 

In Year 10 Coordinated Sciences, we have been discussing living things.  Our focus coming up is on how things move in and out of cells, particularly through diffusion.  In Year 11, we have continued our study of waves, with our focus being on the behaviour of light waves.  We finished up our discussions on how materials are transported throughout mammals with our heart dissection in AS Biology.  Now we are finishing up talking about how gases are exchanged in the body, with infectious diseases being our next topic. For A Biology, we have just finished up our look at how we analyse and discuss biodiversity and will be moving on to learning more about genetic technologies.  We even took a little time to help the Year 6 students better understand the structures and functions of the heart. 

Ms. Nadezhda (Music) 

Hello everyone,  

We are continuing the preparation for two big events of our school - CIS Got Talent and Summer Concert.  

Kids are working hard, rehearse a lot, form bands, collaborate with teachers and prepare their music compositions.  

Friendly and inspirational atmosphere is present on every musical rehearsal.  

Please, remember that if student want to participate in this competition (April,26), Ms Hope waits for your application till 1.04.  

Also note, that if you need any help with music/minus/directing , you can be sure that we will help you.  

All parents are welcomed for participating with their kids. 

Mr. Ruslan (Russian Language and Literature – Russian Program)

Вместе с учениками из Year 7 мы начали изучение морфологических признаков глагола. На уроках литературы познакомились с творчеством С. Я. Маршака, К. Г. Паустовского и А. П. Платонова, а теперь приступили к изучению творчества Виктора Петровича Астафьева, а именно его рассказа «Васюткино озеро».

С Year 8 мы продолжаем подготовку к итоговой аттестации. Разбираем тексты пропущенными орфограммами и пунктограммами. На уроках литературы мы продолжаем анализировать главу из повести-феерии Александра Грина «Алые паруса».

Вместе с Year 9 продолжаем цикл уроков, посвященных анализу произведения Максима Горького «Детство». На уроках мы разбираем, как, проходя через «свинцовые мерзости жизни», главный герой смог не растерять в себе нравственные качества.

С Year 10 мы закончили раздел, посвященный обращениям и вводным конструкциям. В субботу написали контрольную работу по этой теме. На уроках литературы обзорно изучили самых ярких представителей Серебряного века, особенно творчество Александра Блока. Из прозы нами были прочитаны произведения И. С. Шмелева «Как я стал писателем» и М. А. Осоргина «Пенсне».

Mr. Vladimir (Geography – Russian Program)

С учениками из Year 7 мы закончили очень важный и значимый блок про Великие географические открытия и перешли к детальному и очень подробному изучению материков нашей планеты. За это время мы уже изучили такие материки, как Евразию и Африку. Впереди, по программе, нас ждет изучение Северной и Южной Америки, Австралии и Антарктиды.

С ребятами из Year 8 мы перешли к большому блоку “Гидросфера”, узнали основные закономерности в Мировом круговороте воды в природе, состав и строение гидросферы, основные части рек и их режим, виды рек. Также очень важно было отразить особенности грунтовых вод для жизни человека и узнать, на какие виды они делятся. Изучили виды озерных котловин по происхождению и узнали откуда в озерах берется вода. Очень важно для ребят было узнать про ледники и какую значимость они несут для человечества, разобрали виды ледников по происхождению и записали классификацию ледников по способу их образования. Впереди нас ждет изучение биосферы и основных процессов, которые происходят в географической оболочке.

Year 9 на данный момент проходят комплексное изучение материков. Мы уже изучили Австралию, Южную Америку и сейчас продолжаем нашу работу, но уже изучая Антарктиду. Под комплексной работой я подразумеваю следующее: изучение истории развития материка, истории изучения материка, рельеф, полезные ископаемые, водные объекты, климат и многое-многое другое.

С Year 10 мы изучаем очень важный и серьезный блок про природные зоны России, разобрали такие природные зоны как: арктическая пустыня, тундра и лесотундра, леса умеренного пояса (тайга, смешанные и широколиственные леса), лесостепи и степи, полупустыни. воздушные массы, атмосферный фронт, циклоны, антициклоны. Изучили природные зоны и их распространение и теперь с уверенностью скажем, где в нашей стране распространены степи, а где тайга. 

С ребятами из Year 11 мы продолжаем изучать экономико-географические районы РФ и прошли такие темы как: “Европейский Северо-Запад”, “Центральная Россия” и начинаем проходить тему:  “Европейский Юг”. В рамках этих тем мы изучаем ресурсы, экономику и основные достопримечательности регионов России. Помимо теоретических знания, которые получили ребята, мы попробовали свои силы на практике и решили несколько экономических задач.

С ребятами из Year 12 мы изучаем отрасли мировой промышленности: машиностроение, химическая промышленность, металлургия, а также узнали, какие страны обладают большим количеством этих производств.

С Year 13 мы успешно закончили изучать экономики таких материков, как Ю. Америка и Африка, более близко познакомились с географическим положением, населением, структурой экономики и даже историей и перешли к детальному изучению Антарктиды. Впереди нас ждет Австралия.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I was pleased to see students returning from their break week full of energy and ready to continue their learning. I could see students involved not only in their academic activities but also in sports and House events.

We have two important social events happening at CIS soon: the Art Auction on April 19, and CIS Got Talent on April 26.

Students and teachers are actively preparing for the Art Auction. Students have produced more than twenty great pieces of work that will be showcased and sold on April 19. The received funds will go to a charity chosen by the students themselves. I will be glad to personally greet you and your friends during this CIS gala event.

CIS Got Talent is also around the corner. I encourage students and their families to participate in the following categories:

• Singing
• Vocal and instrumental ensembles
• Choreography
• Instrumental performance
• Art
• Circus skills/magic
• Theatre
• Family project

The auditions are going to take place from 10.04 till 14.04. If you have any questions, please ask Ms Nadezhda.

Our students in years 11, 12, and 13 are starting the final sprint of the school year. From the second week of April until the end of May, they will be writing their exams and producing the work they need to complete their portfolio of evidence that will be submitted to Cambridge. I strongly recommend that students in these year groups prioritize their studies and focus on their preparation on their exams to ensure a great result.

Finally, I want to express my gratitude to our school community for their effort in complying with the school’s uniform policy. I can now see many more students coming to school with collared shirts or polos and, during PE days, with sport clothing without pictures. For those students who for some reason were not able to bring a white uniform shirt, I have made available several shirts of different sizes that students can borrow for the day.

Уважаемые Родители и Опекуны,

Я с радостью отметил, как наши студенты возвращаются с каникул, полные энергии и  стремления продолжить учебу. Я вижу, что наши студенты вовлечены не только в свою академическую деятельность, но и в спортивные и другие мероприятия.

В ближайшее время в CIS пройдут два важных события: Арт-аукцион 19 апреля и CIS Got Talent 26 апреля.

Студенты и преподаватели активно готовятся к Арт-аукциону. Учащиеся создали более двадцати замечательных работ, которые будут показаны и выставлены на продажу  19 апреля. Полученные средства пойдут на благотворительность в соответствии с выбором самих студентов. Буду рад лично поприветствовать Вас и Ваших друзей во время этого торжественного мероприятия в CIS.

CIS Got Talent также не за горами. Я призываю студентов и их семьи участвовать в следующих категориях:

Наши студенты Year 11, 12 и 13  выходят на финишную прямую этого учебного года. Со второй недели апреля и до конца мая они будут  сдавать экзамены и создавать работу, необходимую для завершения их портфолио, которое будет представлено в Кембридж. Я настоятельно рекомендую учащимся  этих классов расставить приоритеты в учебе и сосредоточиться на подготовке к экзаменам, чтобы добиться  отличного результата.

Наконец, я хочу выразить благодарность нашему школьному сообществу за  усилия по соблюдению политики школьной формы. Теперь я вижу гораздо больше учеников, приходящих в школу в рубашках с воротником или поло, а в дни физкультуры —  в спортивной одежде без картинок. Для тех студентов, которые по каким-то причинам не смогли принести белую форменную рубашку, я подготовил несколько рубашек разных размеров, которые студенты могут одолжить на день.

From the Classroom

Mr. Watkins (English, Geography, IELTS)

It has been a busy start to the term! Year 9 Geography students completed a small project on glaciers and cold environments. This entailed making a poster for a small class competition. The Year 10 and 11 English students have been writing leaflets and discursive texts, while also dissecting implicit and explicit phrases within extended texts. This will assist with both comprehension skills and larger writing tasks. The Year 12 English students have been working on text analysis based on a self-chosen text. In IELTS class, we have been looking at university terminology and forming an accurate cover letter.

Ms. Liuba (Russian as an Additional Language, English Support)

For the first time this week, Year 7 students were able to get together in the Russian language classroom after one term online. The first couple of lessons were spent on revision and preparation of individual posters that comprise the topics of the material covered earlier.

This week, Year 8 student continued his acquaintance with the cases of the Russian language. It is also worth noting that he is already at the final stage of mastering the Russian handwriting!

Year 10 RAL students dove into some punctuation rules of the Russian language last week learning when you need a dash in a sentence.

Ms. Marina (Physical Education)

Last Friday our volleyball team of 8 students had a friendly game with our partner School 53.

Three games were played, and our students won two of them.

In our regular PE lessons students learn how to play handball. We have reviewed the main rules and regulations, techniques of the game, practiced handball skills and now most of the students successfully participate in a real game. 

Mr. Lyons (Mathematics, Science, Physics)

A great deal has been covered in mathematics for lower secondary, meaning that we are ahead of schedule and have time in our pockets for revision and filling any gaps in our knowledge. 

Year 7 put a lot of effort into their percentages work – an area which often needs more time to master. With that under their belt, they moved on to ratios and proportions, which rely heavily on the ability to convert between fractions and percentages.

Year 8 have tested theoretical probabilities and come up with their own experimental probabilities by playing with dice! The results were quite surprising, leading to discussions on bias and what “fair” really means. We have since moved on to transformations, such as translations, reflections, rotations and enlargements.

Year 9 are one step ahead, having completed their work on bearings and transformations, now concentrating on data interpretation and representation, which types of graph/chart are more suitable for displaying which sets of data, and so on.

Science for Year 7 has entered the realms of Physics, exploring energy sources and conservation, the great abyss of space, and currently, forces and their effects. With so much of the syllabus already complete, there will be plenty of time for fun-filled experiments and practicals leading up to the summer.

Year 12 Physics continues to push and challenge as we put electrical theory and practical circuits behind us and wave in... waves. Longitudinal waves, transverse waves, the doppler effect, superposition, stationary waves – with so much to learn, it will be an intense few weeks.

Mr. Claassen (Science, Chemistry)

Due to the fact that we spent the last weeks of the previous term catching up on chapter and activity videos as well as posters we didn’t end up writing our end-of-chapter tests and thus the first week back after the term break is, unfortunately for the students 😊, test week in Science.

The Year 8 class are writing on chemical reactions. They need to know how to work out the name of a compound from the elements in it, how to write word equations and describe chemical reactions, how different salts can be made from reactions with acids and what compounds are formed when metals and non-metals react with oxygen.

The Year 9 class needs to know all about reactivity and rates of reactions. In this topic they will write about how different metals react with oxygen, water and dilute acids, the reactivity series of metals, displacement reactions and the effect of temperature, concentration, particle size and catalysts on the rate of reactions.

The Year 12 Chemistry class is approaching exams at a rapid pace and therefore work in class is also proceeding at a rapid pace. They have already written tests on the Group 2 and 17 elements and started on the topic of Nitrogen.

The Year 13 Chemistry students are in the same position as the Year 12s and have written tests on Benzene and its compounds as well as Carboxylic acids and their derivatives. They are starting on Organic nitrogen compounds.

Ms. Irina (Mathematics – Russian Program)

Годовая аттестация все ближе. Изучение математики в классах идёт активно.

Студенты из Year 9 по алгебре заканчивают изучать одночлены, им очень помогают навыки, полученные в конце прошлого года обучения (к вопросу о том, что будут делать ребята после аттестации). Впереди их ждут многочлены и формулы сокращённого умножения – апофеоз программы за курс 7 класса.

По геометрии ребята принялись изучать параллельность прямых. От полученных навыков по этой теме в том числе зависит успешность изучения дальнейшего курса геометрии.

Студенты из Year 12 завершают в курсе алгебры и начал математического анализа изучение степенных функций. Осталось убедиться в хорошем владении методами решений при самостоятельной работе и показать свои успехи на контрольной. Далее ребят ждут показательные и логарифмические функции - в этом году закладывается большой пласт знаний, проверяемых на ЕГЭ.

По геометрии студенты приступили к изучению перпендикулярности плоскостей – последней теме, которая необходима для решения самого интересного блока задач - с использованием многогранников.

Девушки из Year 13 продолжают планомерно готовиться к ЕГЭ, их ждёт пробный экзамен для промежуточного оценивания результата.

Mr. Lomov (History and Social Science – Russian Program)

Новая четверть началась с изучения интересных тем для каждого класса.
Year 7 с головой погрузился в эпоху греко-персидских войн, несомненно одной из важнейших войн эпохи древности.
Year 8 продолжает изучение истории древнерусских земель. Новые термины, даты, имена - сложно, но очень интересно.
Year 9 закончил изучение правления Ивана Грозного и готовится перейти к разбору Смутного времени, одного из самых неоднозначных и драматических периодов русской истории.
Year 10 в хорошем темпе освоил правление императрицы Екатерины Великой и приступил к эпохе Павла I.  Продуктивная работа даст возможность освободить время для изучения основных вопросов курса обществознания в апреле - мае.
Year 11 продолжает освоение материала, необходимого для успешной сдачи ОГЭ по обществознанию. Времени осталось не так много, поэтому мы наращиваем темпы работы на уроках.
Year 12 вплотную подошел к одному из самых неоднозначных моментов истории нашего государства - Гражданской войне. Ребята активно работают, участвуют в дискуссиях и, можно сказать, учатся истории уже как прикладной науке.

We hope you had a relaxing and refreshing weekend and are ready for the last week of this term. 

Our Russia Week this year was a fascinating exploration of various regions in the country and some of the cities of the Golden Ring. Students researched and presented their information for younger and older audiences. Of course, we finished the week with blini and tea! 

Last Week of Term 3 

We are winding up the term with tests, feedback, and reflections. This last week is an important time for your child to be here in school to finish longer-term projects and make sure all work has been submitted. 

Reports will be made available to you on Friday, March 3. 

The last day of Term is also Friday, March 3. Please pick up your child at the regular pick-up time.

Русская неделя 

Наша Неделя России в этом году стала увлекательным исследованием различных регионов страны и некоторых городов Золотого кольца. Студенты изучали и презентовали информацию для младшей и старшей аудитории. Конечно, мы закончили неделю блинами и чаем! 

Последняя неделя 3-го семестра 

Мы завершаем этот семестр тестами, отзывами и размышлениями. Эта последняя неделя является важным периодом для посещения школы Вашим ребенком, чтобы закончить долгосрочные проекты и убедиться, что все работы были сданы. 

Отчеты об обучении будут готовы в пятницу, 3 марта. 

Последний день семестра также пятница, 3 марта. Пожалуйста, заберите своего ребенка в обычное время.
